Chapter 2

Hanson waited out in the waiting room and two of the three biting their nails. Sarah had scared them, and when a few nurses came in and called for some doctors to come in they just about had a panic attack. The people had pushed them out of the room and they started her heart up again. The doctors were still with her and they were all blaming themselves for getting her too excited. They waited for another 15 minutes when a doctor came out. “She’s stable right now but please don’t work her up. Her heart can’t take it much longer, and I’m sure she’s told you that she also won’t make it very long.” All of them looked like a train had hit a family member, “what!”

The doctor looked at them, “she hasn’t told you anything?” They shook their heads, “it’s not my place to tell you and I’ve already too much.” “Tell us, we are the ones that help with the bills.” The doctor shook his head. “I’m sorry, but that doesn’t matter, she will have to tell you.” And the doctor walked off and they ran back in her room.

All of the gifts were on the couch against the wall and she was sleeping. Zac started crying, “is she going to die?” They didn’t answer their brother because they couldn’t. “Tay, Ike?” Ike looked at his younger brother, “I don’t know Zac, we hope not.” “Hey, maybe, we can make an announcement type of thing and tell our fans to their parents know that if something happens to them that they’ll donate their organs.” “ZAC!” Both of them said, “that is VERY morbid.” And after a few minutes, “we understand though Zac.”

They sat on two of the chairs and Zac plopped himself down on the couch. Sarah stirred and all of them stood up. She looked around at them, “I’m sorry!” She started crying. “No! No! Stop crying! You have to stop!” She did and looked at them, “I’m sorry, that ruined everything. It’s all my fault!” Her eye’s teared up. Ike walked over to her, “no it’s not Sarah, what happened couldn’t be helped. But why don’t you open our gifts to you so you don’t have to feel guilty.” She smiled and put her arms out and he hugged her. “Ok, thanks you guys, you didn’t have too you know. With the bills and all that’s quite enough.” “Sarah.” “Yeah?” “Shut up and open the gifts.” She smiled at Zac and motioned for him to give some to her.

All of them were piled on the bed in a heap. “Ok, mine first.” Zac said and he gave her one of the small packages. She opened it up and gasped, “oh my gosh, these are beautiful!” She pulled out a pair of 14 K gold earrings in the shape of musical clefs. “Oh thank you!” And she propped herself up and she hugged him. “You shouldn’t have gotten these!” “Why not, I thought they looked cool!” “They are, they’re beautiful, but . . .” And they knew what she was thinking. Zac spoke up, “see, when you get your new heart I’m going to need a date to the Grammies and you always have to have accessories.” Taylor and Ike spoke up at the same time, “I don’t think so!” She laughed and looked at the two, “hey, he asked first, I’m going with him. But Zac, I’ll be there but probably not with you with you.” “Stop it Sarah, this is Christmas. I know you feel upset and you have all reason to be but don’t depress us!” Taylor said and she shut up. She looked at him, “fine. Just give me the next gift.” They all laughed, and gave her more of the gifts. While doing that she was putting the earrings on. It took her 10 minutes because her fingers were shaking.

She was finally down to 6 more gifts, “ok, there is one left Sarah. And the rest are for tomorrow.” She nodded and Ike was holding the last gift. “You guys, would you leave please?” And Taylor and Zac stood up and left, “you want anything? We’re going to the café downstairs.” “DON’T! Go to get something edible out of the hospital! I’m eaten this food and you don’t want it!” They laughed and walked out to get something from the vending machines. Ike shut the door after them and sat down on the bed next to her. “Ok, here’s your gift.” And he handed it to her.

She slowly unwrapped the gift. She gasped and almost dropped the box. “Oh my God! Isaac!” His eye’s filled with tears. “Look, Sarah, despite what you say you are going to live. And after you get a heart of someone’s we are going to wait until you are done with college or whatever and we are going to get married. I’m not ashamed, and I wish I could tell everyone in the world we are together and always will be. I’m sorry, Sarah, but you are going to live. No, you HAVE to live. That’s the only way I’ll accept it and you know what, I will always get my way. No matter what, I get my way.” She looked at him with eyes welling with tears. He lifted her left hand and placed the ring on her finger, “Sarah, will you marry me.”

She started full fledged sobbing, “no, Ike, no. Why are you fooling yourself? I’m NOT going to live.” She looked up at him, “please don’t do this Ike. Please understand, we both want this but I’m not going to live and . . . and . . . I can’t Isaac!” He looked at her and he started crying, “why can’t you . . . I mean . . . Sarah you can’t do this to me! I love you more than anything!” “No Clarke Isaac Hanson, you better not sing that!” And he began singing More Than Anything. She closed her eyes and refused to listen but couldn’t. She finally opened her eyes and looked at him, pulled him in for a kiss. “Yes Ike, I will marry you.” And he pulled her to him and kissed her. But she knew he was living in a dream world and couldn’t accept reality.
