Density and Specific Gravity
Introduction
mass m
density = =
----------- = ----
volume V
The density is independent of size for any object of uniform composition.
The SI unit for density is kg/m3. Sometimes
units are give in g/ml which is also equal to g/cm3.
1kg/m3 = 1000 g/ ( 100 cm )3
= 10 -3 g/cm3 thus 3420 kg/m3
= 3.42 g/cm3
The density is temperature dependent. Physics Charts - Densities of Substances
Specific gravity is the ratio of the density of the substance
to the density of water at 4oC. Since water is 1.00 g/cm3
or 1.00 x 103 kg/m3, the specific gravity is equal to
its density in g/cm3.
