Me at my internship Junior year at the News of Orange County
I am currently attending Salem College, Winston-Salem, NC and will graudate in May 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts, Communication and minor in English. In my major I took classes to concentrate in the journalism and public relations field.
As part of many independent studies at Salem College I worked on putting the schools newspaper, the Salemite, online. While I was updating it with every new issue I was working with communication work study students to being an archive section for the web page.
During my Senior year I interned at the Charlotte Observer for the month of January. Where I wrote various feature articles for the Mecklenburg Neighbors. It was one of my best internships and I enjoyed working there a whole lot. I hope to one day return and work there full time.
During the summer of 2004 I had the opporunity to work at the Burlington Times-News. During that internship I wrote play and book reviews, feature and news articles. I was also able to work some with the teen section in editing and coming up with story ideas.
During my Junior year at Salem I interned at the News of Orange County for the month of Janurary. As an inter I wrote feature and news articles. I also covered town meeting and economic development summit.
In the summer of 2003 I had a job experience I will never forget. I worked at the Alamance News. As you can tell there is no blue underline there, which means they do not have a web page. That should be the first indication of how that paper was and before I begin to rant about it I'll just go ahead and sum up what I actually did. While working there I wrote feature and news articles, worked with community on recipes of the week, wrote area happenings and covered town meetings.
My very first Jan term internship at Salem was with the Chapel Hill Herald Sun, which is part of the Durham Herald Sun. I was only able to intern there for a month but I gained a whole lot of valuable experience from my friend Geffory Graybeal. During that internship I attended Pittsboro town meetings and Chatham County board meetings writing articles about both the town and the county.
My very first newspaper experience was in August of 1999 when I went to the Durham Herald Sun for a meeting about a new teen section they were going to start. I beilve you can say that is where it all started. I worked with the teen section at the Herald until 2003 when I turned 20 and was no longer considered to be a "teen". While I worked on the section I wrote news, features, concert and C.D. reviews and opinion articles.
