The Pinecrest girls' soccer players are proving to be good "mudders."
They seemed to barely notice the light but steady rain that fell throughout most of Monday's 10-0 home victory over Jack Britt. Under much more severe conditions at an away match on Saturday, they breezed past Wilson Hunt, a non-conference opponent, 6-2.
The Patriots take an 8-1-1 overall, and 6-0 record in the Mid-Southeastern Conference, into this evening's 7 p.m. match at Westover.
"It's really fun to slide in the mud and stuff," junior Lyndsey Anderson said after following her first high school hat trick at Wilson Hunt with two goals and a pair of assists against Jack Britt. "The play is crazy. The weather was just horrible, and the rain was three times as hard as this on Saturday."
Last April, Jack Britt defeated Pinecrest 2-1 on its home field, ending an 82-game conference unbeaten streak. That fact wasn't weighing on Anderson or Patriot coach Larry Martin on Monday.
"I thought about it at some point last week," the coach said, "but not tonight. I had an idea where they were this year by comparing scores. I knew we were going to be stronger than them, but I was surprised we were this much stronger."
The Pats' Latanya Cain received a slick through pass from Morgan Maples and scored the first of her four goals only 27 seconds into the match. About five minutes later, Kate Hieronymus connected from 28 yards out with a wicked left-footed shot, making it 2-0.
Anderson fed Cain and Katie Letsinger for goals, and scored herself off a Maples corner kick, as the Patriots took a 6-0 lead into the intermission.
"We're playing well right now," Martin said. "We've got a good group and they're playing well together."
Keely Harbour, who shared the goalkeeping with Sarah Dejak, preserved the Patriots' fifth shutout of the season with a point-blank save midway through the second period. Cain, Bailey Pages, Rebecca Dupre and Anderson scored goals in about a 10-minute span as the home team wrapped things up under the 10-goal mercy rule with about a minute left.
Anderson and Maples each had two assists with Hieronymus, Dupre, Ellyse Szewczak and Cain recording one each.
Pinecrest also took command early against a Wilson Hunt squad that was 11-1 and ranked 12th in the 3-A North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association Poll.
"It was a long drive to Wilson," Martin said, "but it was worth it."
Anderson scored all of her goals in the first half, and Cain had the other, as the Patriots took a 4-1 halftime lead.
Cain and Maples found the net in the second half. Cain, Anderson, Amber Fernandez and Hieronymus were credited with assists.
The Patriot defense limited Wilson to only three shots.
"The first 15 minutes of that game was the best soccer I've seen this group play," Martin said. "They were just totally dominating. After that, the rain started coming down in sheets with 25 mile per hour winds. This was balmy tonight compared to that."
Before congratulating his soggy players on Monday's performance against the Buccaneers (4-4-2, 3-2), he had a message for them.
"No matter what the weather is, we are going to practice tomorrow," he told them.
Earlier in the evening, the Pinecrest junior varsity team (6-0-1) posted its fifth shutout in an 8-0 victory over Jack Britt. The Patriots have allowed only three goals this season.
