PINECREST PREPS FOR TONIGHT'S
CLASH AGAINST SCOTLAND GIRLS
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Wednesday, March 12th, 2008
After dispatching Douglas Byrd 11-0 on Monday, the attention of the Pinecrest girls' soccer team quickly shifted to tonight's opponent, Scotland County.
The Patriots are 2-1-1 after scoring 11 goals in the first half of their Mid-Southeastern Conference opener played at the John Williams Athletic Complex.
Senior Latanya Cain scored five times, setting a Pinecrest single-game record.
The first-half margin brought the match to a close under the league's new 10-goal mercy rule that is invoked after at least one half of play.
Coach Larry Martin's squad travels to Laurinburg for a 7 p.m. match against a Scot team that is 5-0 after beginning conference play with a 10-1 win over Westover.
The Patriots have beaten them 11 times in a row, but the last two played on the Scots' home field have gone down to the wire.
Scotland boasts a 5-4 win over Lumberton, a team Pinecrest tied last week.
"I'm anticipating this is going to be a battle," Martin said. "Scotland's playing very well and Colin McDavid (Scotland coach) obviously has things going down there. I've never played a game there that I really felt was easy.
"It might very well be for the conference championship this early in the season so the girls need to be ready."
Douglas Byrd goalkeeper Brittany Best had an amazing 20 saves in a half in which the home team launched over 40 shots.
Best had already stopped five when Kate Hieronymus and Cain scored within seconds of each other in the fourth minute of the match, both off assists by Katie Letsinger.
It was 5-0 after 20 minutes on a pair of goals by Lyndsey Anderson and one by Morgan Maples.
A goal by Jill McIlwain, another by Hieronymus, and four more by Cain completed the scoring. Cain now has 10 for the season in raising her career total to 122.
Letsinger, Rachel Dokich and Ashley Sweeting contributed two assists apiece, and McIlwain had one.
Sarah Dejak minded the net for the Patriots as they posted their second shutout of the season.
On a night that Pinecrest was very sharp with its passing, Lisa Hopkins was one of the builders of the attack from the midfield.
The senior is expecting things to be a lot tougher against a Scotland team that includes a number of players she knows very well -- including one of the league's top goal scorers in Megan Brigman.
"We played with some of their girls during our last club soccer season (Sandhills Force)," Hopkins said. "That's big competition-wise because they want to show they're better than us.
"We don't have that much competition in the conference so this is a big game."
Brigman, in particular, has the Pinecrest coach concerned.
"She's got a lot of speed," Martin said. "You've got to anticipate, and be focused, and not go to sleep. If you do, they'll make you pay for it."
