PATRIOTS ROLL IN GIRLS' SOCCER PLAY
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Friday, March 16th, 2007
It isn't unusual for girls' soccer players at Pinecrest to double up and perform for the track team in the spring.
This year, Caitlin McArdle is one of a number of Patriot varsity and jayvee players that plan to do both.
Wednesday evening at Richmond County, the speedy and tenacious defender played every minute of the match in the Patriots' 9-0 victory over the Raiders.
The win moved the Patriots to 3-0 in the Mid-Southeastern Conference and 4-0-1 overall. Molly Lynch (three) and Latanya Cain (two) combined for five first-half goals to help seal the home team's fate early.
"I think it takes special kids to do that," Patriot coach Larry Martin said of the multi-taskers. "It's tough physically and it takes a lot of commitment to be prepared to do both sports.
"Caitlin plays defense and she's a distance runner. Put those together and that's toughness."
Like Ann and Katie Fields from past soccer teams, McArdle is a standout in both sports. She was a member of the Patriots' 3,200-meter relay team that finished second at the recent NCHSAA indoor championships, and came in first outdoors as a part of that quartet at last year's East Regional. She also runs for the cross country team in the fall.
On days that soccer practice ends early, the junior gets in a couple of miles of work with the track team.
"It's a lot of fun and it keeps me in shape," the junior said. "Track complements my soccer and soccer complements the track."
Against a young Raiders' squad, Lynch opened the scoring in the eighth minute off a pass from Kristen Anderson. Starting in the 15th minute, the Patriots scored three quick goals, two by Cain on solo efforts and another by Lynch off a Kristen Capasso throw-in.
A few minutes before the intermission, Lynch made it 5-0 with a shot from about 20 yards out, completing her hat trick.
With Cain, Lynch and many of the other starters on the bench for most of the second half, the scoring pace slowed for awhile, but the Patriots continued to maintain a huge edge in ball possession.
Patriot goalkeeper Morgan Saunders handled only one shot on goal in the entire match. With 24 minutes left to play, defender Sarah White found it impossible to suppress a great big yawn. It was that kind of second half.
Lisa Hopkins and Amber Fernandez each scored second-half goals from about 25 yards away. Goals by Morgan Maples and Kristen Anderson (penalty kick) completed the scoring. The loss dropped Richmond to 1-1 in the conference and 1-4 overall.
McArdle was to miss Pinecrest's home track meet on Thursday because the soccer team was scheduled to play at Westover.
"I don't want to see the girls denied the opportunity to participate in another sport," Martin said, "but they have to decide where their priority and their focus is, and work around it."
Next Monday, the Patriots meet Hoke County at home in a 7 p.m. contest.
The Pinecrest jayvee team (3-0) defeated Richmond 6-1 Wednesday. Bailey Pages (two), Paton Davis, Morgann Pincock, Mary Barkley and Rachel Stewart scored the Patriot goals. Standing out on defense for coach Ray Blatz were Ashley Thornton and goalkeeper Kayla Herm.
