Senior Molly Lynch scored four goals, leading the Pinecrest girls' soccer team to a 7-1 season-opening victory over Southern Lee. The Patriots began the home match with seven returning starters from last year's squad that finished 20-5-1 and made it to the fourth round of the state 4-A playoffs. Missing was Lorna Martin, who turned the coaching reins over to Larry Martin (no relation) after being the Patriot coach since the program's inception in 1992. "We've got some experience on the team and we've got some go-to players," Larry Martin said after the easy win. "We've got a core group of girls that are very talented and we've got others that are going in that direction." Junior Latanya Cain, who scored a team-record 47 goals last season, got the Patriots on the board in the fifth minute of the match off a muff by the Cavalier goalkeeper. With Martin exhorting his players to switch fields on the Cavs, the Pats put that tactic to work in the 29th minute. During a buildup that began on the right-side of the field, Lyndsey Anderson crossed a ball from the left to Christina Consalvo in the Cav penalty area. Consalvo first-timed a pass to Lynch, who blasted the ball high into the net at the far post. "Coach Martin was trying to get us to swing it because this team was staying compact in the middle," said Lynch, who scored 24 goals as a junior. Cain assisted on another Lynch goal just before halftime, making it 3-0. Five minutes into the second half, Lyndsey Anderson slipped a ball through the penalty box that Lynch ran on to for an easy finish and a 4-0 Patriot advantage. After the Cavs (0-2) took advantage of a Patriot defensive lapse for their only goal, Lynch connected again. The final two goals were made by Kristen Anderson, one on a penalty kick, and the other off a pass from Cain. Morgan Saunders minded the net for the home team. "I think we have a pretty good team this year," Lynch said, "but this wasn't the greatest game we played. We lost a few players from last year, but we gained a lot of good people, too." Pinecrest begins Mid-Southeastern Conference play on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. match at Douglas Byrd. The Patriots will be seeking their 10th conference title in a row. Martin, who has compiled a record of 205-59-21 as the coach of the Patriot boys, is still learning about the capabilities of his players. "It's going to be interesting to find out where everybody goes best," he said. "If we're able to play for 80 minutes in a game, there's a lot of potential here for a lot of success." The Patriot junior varsity squad defeated Southern Lee 8-0. Jill McIlwain, Bailey Pages and Melanie Richardson each scored twice. Hailey Ciccolanti and Kelly Godwin also scored. Ciccolanti, Godwin, McIlwain and Mary Barkley were credited with assists. Keely Harbour was the Patriot goalkeeper. 3-7-07 at Douglas Byrd (W, 15-0) Next>> |
