PATRIOTS SHUT OUT 71ST GIRLS
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006
A few minutes after Monday's 6-0 victory over Seventy-First, a little girl came running toward Pinecrest soccer coach Lorna Martin.
Last week Martin and her husband Mike became the proud parents of an adopted baby girl.
"I hope she ends up just like her, because she's the coolest kid ever," the coach said looking toward 4-year-old Jackie Rocque accompanied by her sister Jenny, a member of the Patriot squad.
The Patriots were not seriously challenged by their opponent while improving to 13-0 in the Mid-Southeastern Conference and 17-3-1 overall. It was their 70th conference win in a row.
Another one at Douglas Byrd tonight will make four consecutive 14-0 seasons in league play. Martin's squad has already wrapped up its ninth league title in a row.
Playing at home, the Patriots led 2-0 at halftime on goals by Christina Consalvo and Latanya Cain. Cain scored two more in the second half to go with goals by Ann Fields and Molly Lynch. Brittney Dishner (three), Lynch (two) and Fields contributed assists.
Goalkeepers Katelyn Burwell and Morgan Saunders combined to record the Patriots' eighth shutout of the season.
"We started off kind of slow," Fields said. "I think that was because we hadn't played in a couple of days and had prom this weekend. We picked up the pace in the second half."
It was another productive night for Dishner, who spent the evening serving balls up from her right midfield spot.
"She crosses the ball perfectly," Martin said of the senior. "If someone's in the right place at the right time, they can finish it."
The Martin's first child is named Amelia Grace -- Mia for short. The Patriot coach said that she and her husband did not have the former U.S. Women's team star Mia Hamm in mind when they selected the name.
"I know everyone's going to think that," she said, "Not that I wouldn't wish she would turn out like her."
Fields was one of the players that visited the Martins at home last week.
"It's really exciting," the senior said. "Mrs. Martin has been around kids for so long now, and has had such an impact on all of our lives. I'm glad that she's finally a mother."
Monday's game was originally scheduled to be Senior Night. Dishner, Fields, Rocque, Burwell and Sarah Patnode will instead be honored on Friday before the 7 p.m. non-conference match against Western Guilford. The Hornets (16-0-2) came into this week as the fourth-ranked team in the 3-A NCSCA poll.
Martin, who has over 200 career wins since starting the Patriot girls' program in 1992, plans to continue coaching the team. She was asked if she felt any differently, taking the field for the first time as a mom.
"I felt a little more laid back," she said. "Not that this isn't important, but it's like now there's something more important."
