Molly Lynch and Latanya Cain each scored a pair of goals in Pinecrest’s 4-0 soccer victory over Jack Britt at home Wednesday night.
Both teams came into the match unbeaten in conference play. The Patriots, 5-0 in the Mid-Southeastern Conference and 7-2 overall, are idle until they travel to Seventy-First next Wednesday.
The Patriot jayvee team improved to 4-0 and 6-2 with a 3-1 win over the Buccaneers in the preliminary match.
Assistant coach Hector Cuevas liked the way the Patriots attacked the visitors throughout the varsity contest.
“I think tonight for the first time really this season, our midfield and forward combination started to hook up — getting the ball wide and then playing the ball early so they have some room in there — instead of just crossing and crossing,” he said.
In a match that was closer than the score indicated, Cain carried the ball for about 30 yards in the 20th minute before beating the Buc goalkeeper for the first goal. With midfielder Ann Fields getting touches on almost every Patriot attack, Lynch connected about four minutes later from about 25 yards away on a high shot that glanced off the goalkeeper’s hands.
Both teams made strong challenges in the final four minutes of the half. A Lynch shot was parried over the bar by the Buc goalkeeper. Two minutes later, Patriot sweeper Marissa Dotson kicked a ball away just before it reached an open goal at the far post.
Five minutes into the second half, the Patriots’ Kristen Anderson carried the ball down the right wing before playing an early ball that Fields controlled near the circle of the penalty area.
Fields touched it off to Cain who put a soft shot on the ground inside the near post, making it 3-0.
In the 67th minute, Cain crossed a ball from the left side to Lynch in the penalty box. The Patriots were awarded a penalty kick after Lynch’s feet were taken out from under her. She converted to complete the scoring.
“We lost a lot of players from last year,” Lynch said after the team’s fifth straight victory, “but we’re starting to click.”
In the closing minutes, Patriot midfielder Andrea Pinchac was helped from the field after hurting a knee.
“Hopefully, Andrea can recover from that injury,” Cuevas said. “I thought she had a heck-of-a game. Then of course Ann Fields is our roadrunner in there.”
Katelyn Burwell minded the net as Pinecrest posted its third shutout of the season. Jack Britt fell to 3-1 in the conference and 3-4 overall.
The Patriot jayvee goals were scored by Megan Dann, Cally Blue and Stephanie Shannon.
