FIELDS' HAT TRICK LEADS PINECREST GIRLS IN SOCCER
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Wednesday, March 1st, 2006
Pinecrest came away with a 6-0 victory Monday night, but gave Southern Lee plenty of points for courage.
The Cavalier girls took on a perennial 4-A power on foreign soil in the new 3-A high school’s maiden soccer match.
The Patriots spent almost all of their time at the visitors’ end, but couldn’t find the net until their 16th shot attempt of the first half. In the 35th minute, Kristen Anderson sent a ball across the goal from the right side that Ann Fields ran onto and finished near the left post. It was the first of three goals in the contest for the senior to go with a pair of assists.
In the last minute of the half, Latanya Cain took a hard shot from the left side that a Cavalier defender inadvertently booted into the net for an own goal and a 2-0 Patriot lead.
Eight minutes into the second half, Fields connected from about 18 yards out after taking a pass from Cain. The Patriots broke the match wide open with three goals in a period of five minutes about midway through the final period.
In the 57th minute, Cain put away the rebound off a shot by Sarah Patnode. About four minutes later she scored again with Fields getting the credit for the assist. Cain and Fields collaborated again in the 62nd minute with Fields completing her hat trick.
Cain finished with two goals and two assists. Patriot goalkeeper Katelyn Burwell received credit for the shutout. She handled one shot from the Cavaliers, a first-half attempt from long range by Juanita Lara.
The level of competition is expected to ratchet up a couple of notches for the Patriots on Thursday when they entertain ninth-ranked Apex (NCSCA 4-A preseason poll) at 7 p.m. The evening begins with a jayvee match between the teams, starting at 5 p.m.
The Patriot jayvee team coached by Kelli Klingenschmidt opened the season by defeating Southern Lee 6-0, led by Christina Klug with two goals.
