PHS GIRLS ROLL PAST SCOTS IN SOCCER
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Wednesday, March 16th, 2005
The Pinecrest girls’ soccer team bounced back from Friday’s disappointing loss to South View with a 7-0 victory over Scotland County Monday night at home.
Freshman Latanya Cain led the Patriot attack with a hat trick in the Mid-Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.
Senior defender Lora Smith was feeling better about things after an own goal and a crack in the Patriots’ defensive wall for a direct kick contributed to the 3-1 loss to South View.
“Especially since I scored one of the goals,” she said, referring to a back pass to goalkeeper Katelyn Burwell that found its way into the net. “It was a good wakeup call. We now know we need to step it up.”
The Patriots take a 3-1-2 record into tonight’s 7 p.m. conference match at 4-0 Richmond County. The Scots fell to 0-2.
Goals came much more easily for the Patriots against the Scots after they were held to one in each of the last two matches against South View and Terry Sanford (1-1 tie).
The first one came in the third minute of the match off a sequence that began with a corner-kick by the Pats’ Sara Cole.
After a first shot by Allison Auman was blocked, Katie Fields followed it with another that slipped out of the grasp of Scot goalkeeper Jessica Smid. Lauren Broderick was right there to finish for the 1-0 Patriot lead.
Katie Fields made it 2-0 in the 14th minute after taking a pass from Ann Fields. Then late in the half, Cain received the ball from Molly Lynch and rattled a shot off the top bar of the goal. Lynch ran it down on the other side and beat Smid at the near post, making it 3-0.
“They looked more comfortable playing with each other tonight than they did Friday,” Patriot coach Lorna Martin said of her team. “The scoring was nice, but what was more pleasing was the level of play.”
In the 15th minute of the second half, Auman controlled a low cross from Broderick and delivered a shot that went underneath the Scot goalkeeper for the fourth Patriot goal. It stayed that way until about midway through the half when midfielder Mollyrose Milewski became the catalyst for a three-goal breakout by Cain.
The sophomore often extended the Scot defense with passes outside to Sara Cole on the left wing and Megan Cole on the right. That helped Cain find space to work one-on-one with defenders for goals in the 62nd and 75th minutes.
Then in the 79th minute, Megan Cole served a perfect ball from the right side that Cain ran on to and volleyed into the net in completing the scoring.
Scot coach Colin McDavid is rebuilding with a team that is more than half sophomores and freshmen. He thinks this is probably the best Patriot girls’ squad he has seen.
“They are much deeper,” he said. “She (Coach Lorna Martin) always makes it to the first or second round (of the state playoffs). But number 22 (Cain) is a fantastic player right there. And number five (Sara Cole), that’s the best player I’ve seen in a long time. She plays like Kristine Lilly on the national team.
“Those types of players, along with the other star players that complement them, can take her to the next level. That’s just my opinion.”
The Patriots took 24 shots in the match to three for the visitors. The shutout was the second of the season for Burwell.
The Patriot junior varsity (5-0-2) made it five shutouts in a row with a 3-0 victory over South View last Friday and a 6-0 win over Scotland on Monday. Tricia Westmorland (two) and Lisa Hopkins were the goal scorers against the Tigers.
Against the Scots, Morgan Maples (two), Darcy Stanford, Christina Consalvo, Courtney Broderick and Hopkins found the net. Contributing assists were Cally Blue (two), Hopkins, Broderick and Katie Jeffries. Ashley Kerr and Keely Harbour shared the goalkeeping.
Tonight’s jayvee match at Richmond begins at 5:30 p.m.
