More than a month has passed since Pinecrest has been seriously challenged in a girls’ soccer match. The Patriots moved to 17-0 overall on the season in Monday’s rather pedestrian 7-1 victory at home over Jack Britt. Sophomore Katie Fields scored a pair of goals and junior Lauren Broderick had a goal and three assists as the state’s now eighth-ranked 4-A team moved to 11-0 in the Mid-Southeastern Conference. The last time the Patriots were put to a test was in a 4-1 victory over South View on March 25 when they were tied at 1-1 at halftime. Their last three games leading up to the state playoffs involve teams with a combined record in the league of 3-24-2. That had coach Lorna Martin concerned enough that she has added a game to the schedule. The Patriots will entertain 12-0-2 Wilson Fike on Tuesday, May 4, at 6 p.m. “I’m concerned we haven’t been challenged for a number of games,” she said. “I found a team (Fike) that was also looking for another game. I’m happy to get the win. I thought our passing was good tonight. There were a lot of nice one-two passes.” A steady rain fell for most of the game after the jayvee contest, won by the Patriots 8-0, was stopped with about three minutes remaining by a downpour accompanied by high winds. Six minutes into the nightcap, Broderick got just enough of her head on a perfectly lofted free kick by Lora Smith from about 30 yards away to direct it into the net. The next three goals came in quick succession as the home team sent ground passes all around the Buc half until an opening was found for an attacking ball. In the 31st minute, Sara Cole appeared ready to unload a shot from about 20 yards out, but passed to Fields inside for the easier chance and a 2-0 lead. Four minutes later Fields finished a Cole through ball. In the next minute, Fields passed outside to her sister Ann for the shot that made it 4-0. There were five minutes left in the half when Anne Brannon crossed a ball from the right that Stephanie Carter won from the Buc goalkeeper giving the Patriots a 5-0 lead at the intermission. Early in the second half, the Bucs’ Laresha Cain penetrated the Patriot penalty area only to have her team’s first shot of the night bounce off the left post of the goal. A few minutes later, Martin called it a night for most of the Patriot starters just before Broderick crossed a ball from the left that Megan Cole first-timed into the net. It was Broderick’s 15th assist of the season breaking the single-season Patriot record of 14 formerly held by Laura Peters and Erin Cooper. In the 59th minute, Cain broke free again and collided with Patriot sweeper Mollyrose Milewski in the penalty area. Both were slow in getting up and left the game. Casey Turner, the second-half goalkeeper for the Bucs, converted the penalty kick making it 6-1. Brittney Dishner added the seventh Patriot goal in the 68th minute with Malorie Potts receiving credit for the assist.
