The Pinecrest girls’ soccer team moved to 10-0 in the Mid-Southeastern Conference with a 6-2 home victory over Hoke County Wednesday night.
Lauren Broderick scored four goals in the first 11 minutes to get the Patriots off to a fast start. Shortly after the third one, the Bucks’ Jennifer Lauder connected from about 25 yards away. It was the first goal scored against the Patriots since South View accomplished the feat on March 25.
The Patriots, now 15-0 overall for the season, got their fifth goal in the 13th minute on a direct kick by Allison Auman. Lisa Southerland made it 6-1 in the 27th minute with a long shot from the right side off a pass from Stephanie Carter. The two teams played for another 52 minutes without a goal being scored before the Bucks’ Melissa Maxwell converted a penalty kick with 33 seconds left in the match.
Pinecrest coach Lorna Martin says she was impressed with the improvement shown by Hoke County. The Bucks are in contention for a spot in the playoffs with a record of 4-4 in the conference and 8-7-1 for all games. The Patriots won the first game between the teams 13-0.
“I see now why they beat Jack Britt,” Martin said of the Bucks. “I don’t remember some of their girls from the first time we played, they’ve improved that much. They put pressure on us and played very quickly, which not a lot of teams have done to us recently.”
Martin said that her squad that has now outscored its opponents 104-6 did not take being scored upon by the Bucks lightly.
“They take a lot of pride in stopping the other team,” she said. “Even though they were happy they won, they were disappointed that they were scored on.”
The victory extended the Patriots’ conference unbeaten streak to 40 games. The last loss was by a 1-0 score on March 11, 2002, against Scotland County. Broderick’s big night brought her goal total for the season to 23. She has also contributed 14 assists.
Tonight the Patriots entertain Lumberton of the Two Rivers Conference. The junior varsity match begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity at 7 p.m. Sandhills Youth Soccer League players will be admitted free if they are wearing their team shirt. Members of the West Pine Middle School girls’ soccer team will be ball girls for the match.
