PINECREST TAKES ON LINDSAY,
SOUTH VIEW IN SOCCER TONIGHT

By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Friday, April 4th, 2003
The Pinecrest girls’ soccer team tuned up for tonight’s marquee match at home against South View with a 9-0 victory over Seventy-First Wednesday evening.
Erin Cooper, Lauren Broderick and Stephanie Carter each scored twice in the romp over the Falcons at Pinecrest.
Pinecrest, 8-1-1 overall, leads the Mid-Southeastern Conference with a 5-0 record. South View, 10-0-2 in all games, shares the top spot in the Two Rivers Conference with Terry Sanford, both at 3-0-1.
Adding interest to the contest is the final appearance against the Patriots of state career goal record holder Carolyn Lindsay. The UNC-Greensboro signee broke the record of 195 goals set by Julie Law of Monroe-Parkwood (1998-2000) last week in a match against E. E. Smith. She has since added five more, raising her total to 201.
Lindsay has 32 goals so far this season after scoring 48 as a freshman, 62 as a sophomore and 56 as a junior. The state single season record is 68 by Jennifer Laughridge of Wilson Hunt in 1998.
The only marks on the Tiger’s record this season are ties with New Bern and Terry Sanford. Pinecrest has a loss to Terry Sanford and a tie with Lumberton.
The Patriots have won all four of the meetings between the teams over the last three years, the last two by shutout. The only goal Lindsay has scored against the Patriots was on a penalty kick in her freshman year.
It took Pinecrest only 30 seconds to get on the board against Seventy-First. Cooper took possession of a weak clearance by a Falcon defender and stuck it high into the net from about 25 yards away.
Six minutes later, Katie Fields crossed a ball from the right end line that Falcon goalkeeper Rachael Richards got a hand on but couldn’t wrap up. Lauren Broderick was there to finish it for the 2-0 lead.
Another goal by Cooper, a 35-yarder by Anne Brannon on a direct kick, and one by Jenn Schroeder off of a Brannon assist, made it 5-0 at the intermission.
Carter, twice, Broderick, and Allison Auman scored second-half goals. Katelyn Burwell and Catlynne Arreguin shared the Patriots’ sixth shutout of the season. Each recorded one save. Richards had 13 saves for the Falcons, now 1-5 in the league and 3-8 overall.
The Pinecrest junior varsity is 8-0 after defeating Seventy-First 11-0 in Wednesday’s preliminary match. Goals were provided by Megan Cole (two), Brittany Dishner (two), Bonnie Jonmoore (two), Georgia Haas, Lydia Howell, Kassi Rose, Kasey Thompson and Jillian Murray.
Kasey Thompson and Cole played goal in the fifth shutout of the season for the jayvees.
The Pinecrest and South View jayvee teams face off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity match at 7 p.m.
