PATRIOTS FIND TARGET, DROP BUCKS

The Pinecrest boys' soccer team quickly jumped in front of the visiting Hoke County Fighting Bucks Monday night, earning a 5-1 victory at the John Williams Athletic Complex.
With only three conference games remaining, the Patriots are atop the Mid-Southeastern conference at 11-0 (14-2-1 overall). The Bucks remained in third place, falling to 7-4 in league play.
The Bucks had given the Patriots fits in their first match, a match finally decided in overtime. Pinecrest senior captain Coby Kavanaugh was pleased with the way the rematch played out for the Patriots.
"It's always fun to play against a strong team," he said. "They have Robert (Purcell) ,who is a challenge for any defense.
"However, we came out strong tonight, won the 50/50 balls and got the early lead."
Kavanaugh created his own breakaway just 30 seconds into the match but misfired on the shot. The captain's opportunity to make amends came quickly, as junior John Kropp was tripped en route to goal. With free kick awarded just outside the penalty area, Kavanaugh ripped one past the defensive wall and flat-footed keeper for a 1-0 Patriot lead at two minutes. A short time later, Hoke's talented Purcell caused some panic in the Patriot backline, creating a scoring opportunity that senior keeper Brad McKeever was able to handle.
Back came Pinecrest, as nine minutes in sophomore defender Sam Ivey worked his way downfield, booting a cross from the right sideline. The 40-yard effort fooled everyone as it not only cleared the outstretched keeper but directly found the side netting for a 2-0 lead.
Hoke had an excellent chance to narrow the lead as it was awarded a penalty shot at 27 minutes.
McKeever judged correctly, however, and the 12-yard upper-right corner strike was tipped over the net to preserve the Patriot lead until the break.
Pinecrest would promptly extend its lead after the restart, with Kavanaugh chipping a 25-yard free kick to the goal front, and in the ensuing mad scramble, senior Michael Hieronymus ended up with the ball, poking home the Patriots' third at 42 minutes.
McKeever was tested on back-to-back breaks by the now desperate Bucks, but his diving saves kept them off the scoreboard.
The wide-open play of the opposition created some easy chances for Pinecrest, with sophomore Ryan Osterman the beneficiary at 54 minutes.
He scored the Patriots' fourth goal as a cross swung in by junior Matt Carriker was mishandled by the Hoke keeper and Osterman ran onto the ball and deposited it in the empty net.
The prettiest goal of the night would be the Patriots' final. Carriker started the finale by picking out sophomore Aaron Stroker running down right wing, who delivered a cross onto classmate Thomas Goulden, whose acrobatic mid-air volley found the back of the net.
Purcell would pull one back in the dying minutes for Hoke County, denying McKeever his shutout.
The Pinecrest junior varsity defeated the Hoke javyees in the early match 3-0, with Patrick White scoring a pair and Charlie Thompson notching the other.
Michael Guarente and Dana Parziale combined in goal to record the shutout.
