PATRIOTS LIMP BY FALCONS
By Dean Parziale: Special to The Pilot, Appeared Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007
With five starters out nursing injuries, the Pinecrest boys' soccer team caught a scheduling break and managed to defeat the Falcons of Seventy-First High School 4-0 Monday in Fayetteville.
After one trip through the Mid-Southeastern Conference, the Patriots are 7-0 in league play and 10-2-1 overall. They received votes, but failed to break into the top 15 in the state coaches weekly 4-A state rankings.
Pinecrest coach Larry Martin thought the contest with Seventy-First came along at the right time.
"Tonight was a good opportunity for some of the kids who haven't seen as many minutes," he said. "We've got a lot of guys hurt and a tough game Wednesday with Douglas Byrd."
Pinecrest wasted no time jumping on the Falcons with goals in the second and sixth minutes.
Senior captain Coby Kavanaugh would deliver both scores. He tucked the first goal into the net after some pinpoint passing between himself and junior John Kropp, while the second came after junior Matt Carriker heaved a throw-in in front of the goal, resulting in a mad scramble that was finished by Cavanaugh.
Coach Martin didn't wait long to bring on the reserves as the play turned more physical. Jack Talton, a recent call-up from the junior varsity squad, provided the Patriots' third goal at 25 minutes. After stealing the ball from the last defender 30 yards from the goal, Talton went the rest of the way and beat the keeper for the goal.
The only goal of the second half came from the penalty stripe. At the hour mark, Talton was taken down in the penalty box, and junior Tommy DiThomasso converted the resulting penalty kick for his first Pinecrest goal. Junior Matt Scott recorded his first complete game shutout minding the net for Pinecrest.
Pinecrest plays Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Fayetteville versus Douglas Byrd. The junior varsity team will play at O'Neal School at 5 p.m.
