The Pinecrest boys' soccer team was in control from start to finish Monday night as it dismantled the visiting Jack Britt Buccaneers 5-0 at the John Williams Athletic complex.
The Patriots remain unblemished in Mid-Southeastern conference play at 5-0 and stand at 8-2 overall.
The Patriots' next home match will be this Saturday night in the traditional intra-county tussle with Union Pines (6-3-2).
Local soccer fans will not only be treated to a rivalry game, it will also be Sandhills Youth Soccer League (SYSL) night and all players wearing their team jerseys are admitted free.
Other activities planned for the evening include Miss Moore County Outstanding Teen, Rachael Stewart, singing the national anthem, an ROTC colors presentation and a parade of youth soccer teams at halftime Moore County Schools Superintendent Dr. Susan Purser is scheduled to be on hand to catch the action on the pitch along with what is likely to be a large crowd supporting the two county schools.
The two junior varsity squads start the evening off with a match at 5:30 p.m., followed by the showcase varsity clash at 7 p.m.
Pinecrest coach Larry Martin said his team was able to take advantage of the Buccaneers' strategy to pull off the 5-0 win Monday.
The main person to take advantage was senior captain Coby Kavanaugh, who would record two goals and an assist on the evening.
"They chose to compact the field using the offside trap but didn't really have enough speed in the back to pull it off," Martin said. "We got some easy goals as a result."
The Patriots would at first misfire trying to beat the trap, with a number of early offside calls resulting. However, it did not take long for Pinecrest to punch one in the net.
In the fourth minute, junior midfielder John Kropp would play the ball through the back line and Kavanaugh would sprint onto and deposit it in the lower left of the net for the early 1-0 advantage. The Patriots' second goal would come from the penalty stripe, after a long throw into the goal area by junior Matt Carriker was to be handled by one of the Buccaneer defenders. Kavanaugh easily converting the penalty award to give the Patriots the 2-0 lead.
During the first half, Pinecrest would be ruled offsides eight times, and have one goal taken away.
Just three minutes after the restart, Kavanaugh and Carriker would reverse normal roles, with Kavanaugh's long throw-in headed home by Carriker, pushing the margin to 3-0.
Any hope the Buccaneers harbored would be sunk in the 50th minute as sophomore Jack Talton directed the ball from midfield to sophomore Aaron Stroker on the left wing, who beat his defender 25 yards from goal.
Stroker neatly finished the play, short-siding the Buc keeper for a 4-0 Patriot lead. Another penalty shot awarded five minutes from full-time saw Pinecrest's Matt Scott step to the line and finish the scoring at 5-0. Scott handled the second-half goal-keeping chores, combining with senior Brad McKeever for the shutout.
Because of some lingering injuries to varsity players, Martin called up several jayvee players for the contest.
"Those young kids sure work hard," Martin said of the jayvee players.
The jayvee players that hadn't been called up also worked hard in recording a victory over the Bucs by the same 5-0 score the varsity had posted.
The jayvee goal scorers were Ethan Kavanaugh, Will Price, Austin Dunlop, Dana Parziale and Zack Jones. Parziale and Michael Guarente teamed in net to record the shutout for the Patriots.
