PATRIOTS STOP SCOTLAND IN SOCCER
By Dean Parziale, Special to The Pilot, Appeared Friday, September 14th, 2007
Traveling to Scotland County Wednesday, the Pinecrest boys' soccer team staged its third come-from-behind victory of the season, defeating the Fighting Scots 3-1.
Pinecrest improved to 2-0 in Mid-Southeastern Conference play and 5-2 overall. Tonight, the Patriots will host the state's 4-A second-ranked Apex High School (6-0-1) at the John Williams Athletic Complex in what should be a high-caliber non-conference soccer match.
Pinecrest coach Larry Martin was satisfied with his team's play against Scotland.
"We tried not to play their game," Martin said. "Their field is a matchbox and it takes away from the finesse of the game, slows the game down and can turn it into a throw-in contest. I thought we were able to play our game."
The compact field dimensions did make for physical play, the result being a number of yellow-card cautions handed down by the referees and injuries sustained on both sides.
Both teams would have early-scoring opportunities, Scotland nearly scoring off a corner kick in the 11th minute, but headed from the line by junior defender Eric Parziale. The Scots opened the scoring at 26 minutes when a free kick awarded at the edge of the Pinecrest penalty area saw the ball played around the wall of defenders and finished from a sharp angle right of goal.
It took only two minutes for the Patriots response, equalizing via junior Matt Carriker's sideline throw-in over the Scot keeper's leap that was headed to the back of goal by sophomore Max Brenner for 1-1.
Carriker took matters into his own hands at the 32-minute mark, with the Patriot midfielder pile-driving a shot from 35 yards out that exploded through the keeper's gloves and into net for the 2-1 lead Pinecrest would take to the break.
Four minutes after the restart, Pinecrest obtained insurance for its narrow lead. Senior captain Coby Kavanaugh stepped up to a free kick from 20 yards out, curving his effort over the Scots' wall and into the left-corner of the net for a 3-1 lead.
Pinecrest would be content killing off the rest of the game, with a tiring Scotland side's unsupported attacks unable to penetrate the stout defense played by the Patriot rotation of Taylor Miles, Dylan Cole, Brent Foote, C.J. Phelps, Parziale and Brandon Wilkins.
Brad McKeever and Matt Scott would split the net-minding task.
The Pinecrest junior varsity squad dominated the Scotland jayvees in the early contest, 10-0.
