PAT BOOTERS BACK ON A WINNING TRACK

The Pinecrest boys' soccer team's resolve was tested Thursday night as it quickly fell a goal behind to a game Lee County Yellow Jacket side only to come zooming back for a 5-1 victory.
The non-conference match played at the John Williams Athletic Center with the always supportive Patriot super fans saw the home side's season record improve to 3-2.
After consecutive losses to the state's eighth and ninth ranked 4-A teams, Pinecrest coach Larry Martin was reassured by his team's response to the early deficit against Lee County.
"I saw some good things tonight," he said. "We passed and moved more quickly, created much better scoring opportunities and we're learning on defense. These are some young guys back there and they're improving every night."
Two minutes into the match, an alert Yellow Jacket striker pounced on a loose ball, taking two quick touches before depositing the ball in the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.
It took the home side 16 minutes to produce a shot, but when the shots were there, the Patriots made them count, as they scored on their first three shots taken. Awarded a corner kick, the Patriots executed a well-conceived play. Sophomore Thomas Goulden passed short to Max Brenner, who returned the ball to Goulden, who then delivered an angled cross that Tyler Dawson headed past the diving keeper to level the score at 1-all.
Two minutes later, Brenner would grab the winner, this time receiving a pass from Dawson up the middle, then taking two dribbles and poking the ball past the Jacket keeper for 2-1 Pinecrest lead. The first half scoring would conclude again via a set piece. At the 23-minute mark, Matt Carriker heaved the ball 35 yards on a throw-in to the goal front where Coby Kavanaugh headed it home for 3-1 lead. A frustrated Yellow Jackets player would take a red card a minute later, reducing Lee County to 10 men for the remainder of the contest.
The second half saw Brenner score his second goal of the evening, only three minutes after the restart. Carriker lofted a free kick to the 18, where Brenner controlled it, spun and placed a shot low and right past the diving keeper to put the Patriots up 4-1. Pinecrest finished the scoring in the 64th minute, as sophomore Nick Ceraso crossed one onto the head of Brad McKeever, who drove it to the back of the net.
In its strongest offensive showing of the year, Pinecrest missed on a penalty kick, and scored directly on a free kick that was then ruled offside.
McKeever and junior Matt Scott would split the net-minding chores for the Patriots.
Pinecrest opens Mid-Southeastern Conference play Monday at home, with a 7 p.m. game with Douglas Byrd. In the early contest, the Pinecrest junior varsity will play the O'Neal jayvee team at 5:30 p.m.
The Pinecrest jayvee team maintained its unblemished start with a 5-0 victory over the Lee County visitors. Scoring for the Patriots where Ryan Osterman, Neil Lewis, Ethan Kavanaugh and double-dipper Jack Talton. Dana Parziale and Michael Guerante, combined in goal to record their fifth shutout in as many starts.
