HOGGARD VIKINGS HAND PATRIOTS
LOSS IN NON-CONFERENCE SOCCER

The Pinecrest boys' soccer team traveled to Wilmington Friday to face the J.T. Hoggard Vikings, dropping their first match of the season by a 4-0 score.
The teams were treated to a classic venue, as the match was played at Wilmington's Veterans Stadium, a 1930s WPA project, the home of Wilmington's professional soccer team, the Hammerheads.
Pinecrest fell to 2-1 on the still young season. Pinecrest coach Larry Martin knew his young squad faced a tough match, but felt the score didn't reflect how well his team competed with a veteran Hoggard squad.
"The score looks one-sided," Martin said, "but it was a very competitive game. Hoggard capitalized on every opportunity they had and we didn't. They made us pay dearly for every mistake we made. They only graduated two players from what was an outstanding team last year."
Hoggard jumped out in front quickly, netting two goals in the opening 10 minutes. The first came after a Pinecrest turnover 40 yards from net, leading to a clean break on goal for the Vikings. Senior keeper Brad McKeever was able to get a hand on the shot, but the ball deflected into the goal. The Vikings' second score came from the penalty spot, as an attacker was tripped up in the box.
Pinecrest settled down and played quality soccer over the next 30 minutes, generating several scoring opportunities. However, the Patriots had difficulty getting their shots to find the frame.
Two minutes from the halftime whistle, Hoggard struck again. A Viking midfielder, finding space 25 yards from goal, threaded a curling shot just inside the right post to make the score 3-0.
The second half again found the Patriots unable to finish their good scoring chances, with the best opportunity coming from sophomore Aaron Stroker, who hit the post from short range.
"I'm proud of the kids," Martin said of his team's effort. "We got behind early, but they did not quit. We kept pressing the attack."
Pinecrest faces 13th ranked Terry Sanford at home on Tuesday.
The Pinecrest junior varsity team defeated Hoggard 1-0. Grey Anderson powered home the lone goal, while Dana Parziale and Micheal Guerante teamed up in net for their third consecutive whitewash.
