PATRIOTS CLAIM ANOTHER ONE

Overshadowed in the excitement of last Friday's 1-0 victory over Union Pines on SYSL Night was the 200th career victory for Pinecrest boys' soccer coach Larry Martin.
The Patriots captured No. 201 for their coach on Monday night with a workmanlike 5-0 win over visiting Jack Britt.
"It's his intensity," Patriot sweeper Charlie Davis said when asked what is most impressive about his coach. "I mean, we can't play lackadaisically because we'll hear about it at practice the next day. We have to play with intensity every game no matter how tough the opponent."
The Patriots were intense enough on this night to help frustrate the visitors into two red cards and a double yellow.
Matt Sessoms opened the scoring in the 16th minute, heading home a 40-yard free kick from Russell Stewart at the far post. Stewart made it 2-0 in the 35th minute, connecting from about 25 yards out off of a pass from Coby Kavanaugh.
A well-placed direct kick from about 25 yards out by Karl Ainslie pushed the advantage to 3-0 in the 45th minute.
A few minutes later, the first of three Buccaneer players was excused after taking a swing at the Patriots' Thomas Goulden during a battle for the ball along the sideline.
The visitors didn't produce their first shot until about midway through the second half.
At the 68-minute mark, Sessoms flicked a long throw by Tyler Dawson to Kavanaugh who turned and finished it with his left foot, making it 4-0. Sessoms completed the scoring a few minutes later with a penalty kick.
Overall, the Patriots out-shot the Bucs 32 to two. Glenn Holmes was in the goal for the Patriots' fifth shutout in a row.
"I think that makes 11 shutouts this season," Martin said correctly. "That's one of the things I like to see in a conference match. I like to make sure we have 11 men playing defense. A lot of times that creates offense. We're going to get our goals eventually."
Martin's career record at Pinecrest is now 201-58-21. He recalls that the first win came against Cape Fear in 1995. The current Patriots are closing in on their 10th conference title in a row.
One of the things the coach takes pride in is what he feels is the superior fitness of his teams.
"I think we are the best-conditioned team," Davis says. "During the summer, we run all the time. It pays off in the season."
Pinecrest is currently ninth-ranked in 4-A with an 18-1-1 overall and 11-0 conference record. Jack Britt dropped to 8-11-1 and 7-4.
"It's been a lot of fun," Martin says of the long run, "because I've been blessed with a lot of great kids who came out and worked hard and did what I asked them to do. They've been talented kids, smart kids, kids with character that are willing to do what it takes in terms of work to win."
The Patriots travel to Westover tonight for a 7 p.m. contest. The Patriot jayvee team dropped to 11-2-2 after a 1-0 loss to Jack Britt.
