The Pinecrest boys' soccer team defeated visiting Richmond County Monday night at the John Williams Athletic Center 6-0. The 12th ranked Patriots improved to 15-1-1 overall and 9-0 in Mid-Southeastern Conference matches, while the Raiders' conference record fell to 5-2-1, dropping them to third place. Pinecrest travels to Hoke County tonight to face the second-place Bucks (6-2 in the league). The Patriots wore down the Raiders for the first 15 minutes, with the Raiders chasing the Patriots' sharp passing and possession play. On 17 minutes, a nice combination between Russell Stewart and Jordan Howlett found Karl Ainslie at the 18 where he zipped one past the keeper for the 1-0 lead. A Brandon Zoellner corner kick taken at 19 minutes would bounce around the goal front until Colby Kavanaugh deposited the ball into net for a 2-0 Pinecrest lead. Just two minutes later, a Kavanaugh cross to Murilo Viveiros was deftly settled, with Viveiros looking right and shooting left for a 3-0 advantage. A Tyler Dawson header into goal from another Zoellner corner at 27 minutes would put the game out of reach at 4-0 Pinecrest. Patriot keeper Glenn Holmes would be tested at the end of the half as a foul and direct kick just outside the penalty box was quickly taken by Richmond, with Holmes sprawling to make the fingertip save. Pinecrest added two goals in the second half, the first a rocket off the foot of Ainslie from 30 yards out that found the top right-hand corner and the final from sophomore Tyler Herbst, who would knock back a rebound off a Holmes shot for a 6-0 Patriot lead. C.J. Phelps played keeper for Pinecrest in the second and would preserve the shutout. Pinecrest was able to rest most of the starting 11 for this week's tough matches at Hoke and home against Union Pines Friday, while also allowing sophomores Michael Pigg, John Kropp, Herbst, Matt Carriker and Eric Parziale some significant minutes. The Pinecrest junior varsity also defeated the Richmond County jayvees by the score of 3-1. Goal scorers for the Patriots were Aaron Stroker, Ryan Osterman and Dana Parziale. Matt Scott tended the goal for the Patriots. <-Previous 10-5-06 at #13 Lumberton (W, 1-0) 10-11-06 at Hoke County (W, 10-0) Next-> |
