PATRIOTS STOP SCOTLAND TO STAY ON TOP IN SOCCER
By Dean Parziale: Special to The Pilot, Appeared Friday, October 6th, 2006
The Pinecrest boys' soccer team traveled to Scotland County Wednesday night and came home with a 6-1 win over the Scots in Mid-Southeastern Conference play.
The Patriots remain unblemished in conference play with an 8-0 mark, their overall record improving to 13-1-1. Pinecrest, ranked 12th statewide in 4-A, will played its fourth consecutive road game at 13th ranked Lumberton, 11-1-2, Thursday.
Against the Scots, the Patriots again had difficulty finishing in the early going. Pinecrest repeatedly missed the target from close range until a Michael Hieronymus lob was deftly controlled by Matt Sessoms, who steered it past the keeper for the 1-0 lead at 22 minutes.
With the lid removed from the jar, Pinecrest would quickly deposit two more in a productive 10-minute span.
Jim Hobbs stepped smartly from his defensive role and intercepted a Scotland pass, found Sessoms downfield who in turn threaded a pass to the streaking Silas Cole. Cole would finish to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead at the 25-minute mark.
Four minutes later Russell Stewart would strike a free kick from 30 yards that Coby Kavanaugh would head past the keeper to finish the first-half scoring with Pinecrest ahead 3-0.
Glenn Holmes in net for the Patriots in the first half would turnaway the one good-scoring chance Scotland offered before yielding the shirt and gloves to C. J. Phelps for the remainder of the game.
In control of the match, Pinecrest would demonstrate some fine playmaking in the second half.
Nine minutes in Brandon Zoellner took the ball deep into the left corner and crossed to the far post, finding Sessoms in full stride. He volleyed past the keeper for 4-0. Brazilian exchange student Murilo Vievoros, looking more comfortable with American high school style soccer, would score the next two for Pinecrest.
Finding a seam in the Scots defense, Kavanaugh passed onto a well-timed run by Viveiros who would hit the keeper with his first effort but calmly tuck the rebound home at 68 minutes. One minute later Stewart would find another Viveiros run, with the resulting breakaway finished by Viveiros chipping over the sprawling keeper.
The Scots would get one back on a goal front scrum off a late corner kick for the 6-1 final.
The Pinecrest junior varsity soccer team also defeated the Scotland jayvees by the score of 5-1.
Max Brenner recorded his second hat trick of the season in netting three goals. Nick Ceraso and Ryan Ostermann each contributed a goal. Matt Scott and Dana Parziale split the goaltending chores.
