The Pinecrest boys' soccer team opened its 2006 conference schedule with a convincing 4-0 victory over visiting Scotland County Monday at the John Williams Athletic Complex. Pinecrest is seeking its 10th consecutive Mid-Southeastern Conference title. Impressive wins last week over East Chapel Hill and Wilmington Hoggard have moved coach Larry Martin's side up to 14th in the NCSCA state 4-A weekly rankings with a 5-1-0 record. The Patriots started the game with a bang, taking the opening kickoff straight into the Scotland goal area where striker Matt Sessoms was fouled and rewarded with a penalty kick. Russell Stewart would convert from the mark for a 1-0 lead with only 50 seconds elapsed. Four minutes later, Pinecrest was awarded an indirect free kick from within the penalty area, while Scotland tried to arrange a defensive wall. Stewart quickly chipped the ball across the goal mouth, and Brandon Zoellner headed the ball home for a 2-0 advantage. Scotland County would find its defensive footing for the remainder of the half, keeping Pinecrest frustrated with a high back line that resulted in many offside calls against the Patriots. The half would end without further scoring. Pinecrest came out flying in the second half, the constant pressure was rewarded on a fine play that saw Coby Kavanaugh cross from the near side to find an unmarked Zoellner, who would finish for a 3-0 Pinecrest lead on 46 minutes. Two minutes later, Pinecrest defender Jim Hobbs played a long ball to Stewart, who would volley it into the net only to have the spectacular play ruled offside. The Patriots would finish the scoring five minutes later, Glenn Holmes having just entered the game as striker, would immediately convert a Zoellner corner kick for the 4-0 final. Pinecrest would enjoy the better of the play for the remainder of the game, however. Missing two penalty shots late will probably have the players working on PK's in practice during the week. Holmes and Bradley McKeever combined in net for the shutout, a Scotland free kick with 10 minutes left would test McKeever but a fine save would preserve the clean-sheet. The Pinecrest junior varsity team defeated the Scotland junior varsity 8-0. Max Brenner continued his torrid scoring pace, claiming a hat trick with three goals. Matt Scott and Dana Parziale again combined in goal for the shutout. <-Previous 9-8-06 vs #11 East Chapel Hill (W, 5-3) 9-14-06 at Richmond County (W, 9-1) Next-> |
