Pinecrest started slowly in its Mid-Southeastern boys’ soccer matchup with visiting Hoke County Wednesday.
But by the time the final horn sounded, the Patriots had once again established superiority in the conference with a 5-0 blanking of the Bucks.
Spurred on by Tommy Ransdell’s two goals, Pinecrest moved to 9-0 in conference play, well on its way to its ninth consecutive league championship. The Patriots are 12-3-1 overall.
Russell Stewart scored the lone first-half goal for the Patriots when he nailed a shot down the middle off an assist from Karl Ainslie.
It didn’t take the Patriots long to open the scoring floodgate in the second half. Three minutes into the period, Michael White took a pass from G. R. Horton and drilled the ball into the corner of the net to give Pinecrest a 2-0 lead.
Five minutes later, it was Travis Grasso’s turn to burn the nets. He attacked from the left side and smoked a hard shot from about 10 yards away past the Hoke goalie, burying the ball in the back of the net about waist high.
In the 20th minute, Ransdell collected his first goal of the evening when he scored from in close after Matt Sessoms crossed the ball into the middle from the right side.
Five minutes later, Ransdell took advantage of the strong play of Grasso to record his second goal of the game, closing out the scoring.
There was a series of passes in front of the goal before Grasso let rip with a rocket toward the goal. Ransdell got a foot on it, redirecting the course of the ball to get credit for the goal.
In the junior varsity contest, the Patriots grabbed a 6-1 win. Gustavo Ocampo and Aaron Sprinkle had two goals each for Pinecrest, while Tyler Dawson and Michael Hieronymus had one goal apiece. Assists were provided by Connor Sullivan, John Kropp and David Adams.
The Patriots will hold an SYSL appreciation night Saturday when it takes on Lumberton in non-conference action. The festivities start with the jayvee game at 5:30 p.m.
