PHS KEEPS WINNING IN CONFERENCE SOCCER
CONTRIBUTED, The Pilot, Appeared Friday, October 7th, 2005
The carrot dangled in front of Scotland High for 40 minutes in Wednesday’s Mid-Southeastern Conference soccer match at Pinecrest.
Despite the fact that Pinecrest had controlled the match during the first half, seldom allowing the Scots more than a second touch on the ball, the Patriots had managed only a one-goal lead at the intermission, with that coming on a penalty kick racked up by junior midfielder Russell Stewart in the 15th minute.
But while optimism reigned on the Scotland bench at halftime, Pinecrest coach Larry Martin was reminding his troops to stay focused, read the other team and be patient.
As play resumed in the final period, the Patriots delivered that order, with goals to go.
Three minutes into the period, senior midfielder Travis Grasso cruised in off the left side and launched a missile that stretched the back of the net. The carrot was gone.
Patience paid off on the next goal when senior forward Tommy Ransdell nabbed a pass from Michael White 15 yards out, paused to set the shot, then pulled the trigger for the score.
Stewart got the second part of a pair of goals as the game swung into the final stretch. Junior midfielder Brandon Zoellner spotted Stewart on a cross route for the shot on the run to push the Pats up 4-0.
Grasso weighed in once more with another smoker from his favorite spot off the left side. Ransdell was credited with the assist.
Pinecrest made it an even half dozen with two minutes left to play as Ransdell eluded a pair of defenders down the right side, drove into the corner and lofted a pass into open space in front of the goal. Junior forward Matt Sessoms, reading the move perfectly, blazed a path down the middle toward the goal to meet the ball in the air and redirect it for the point.
The win advances Pinecrest to 10-3-1 overall and 8-0 in league play. Scotland falls to 3-10 and 2-6.
The Pinecrest junior varsity nipped Scotland 2-0 to stay undefeated at 5-0 in conference play, and 8-1-2 overall.
David Adams had an unassisted goal for the jayvee squad early in the second period. Matt Carriker added the insurance point on a second-half goal assisted by Aaron Sprinkle.
The Patriots travel to Union Pines Saturday for a non-conference cross county clash. The jayvee match begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity contest at 7 p.m.
