PATRIOTS STAY CLEAR IN LEAGUE

Pinecrest added another notch in its ongoing sweep through the Mid-Southeastern Conference with an 8-0 rout of Douglas Byrd in prep soccer Monday night in Southern Pines.
The Patriots (7-0-0 in conference) started putting up numbers two minutes into the match when forward Tommy Ransdell banged in the rebound from midfielder Michael White’s free kick at the top of the arc.
Control the midfield, control the game. White emphasized that point five minutes later on a cross to G. R. Horton, who closed fast from the right corner to slip the shot in past the near post for another Patriot point.
And if it works once, do it again, which is exactly what Horton and White did on a Xerox play a minute later — same route, same players and one more goal.
With a comfortable 3-0 lead at the break, the Patriots slipped into cruise gear after the break, using the field and passing more for practice than for points.
Pinecrest began to push the score halfway into the final period. Ransdell opened the run with a short- range tap in front of the goal on a pass from Travis Grasso.
Grasso attacked unassisted on the next goal with a low burner from off the left side that seared the far corner.
Byrd showed the strain of frustration half a minute later, decking Patriot forward Matt Sessoms in the box to set up the penalty kick. Sessoms converted on the PK to stretch the Pat lead to 6-0.
With 10 minutes still showing on the clock, Daniel Johnson rose above the crowd at the left post to get a head on Brandon Zoellner’s cross from the right side, redirecting it for the score.
Marco Gironda tagged the Eagles for one last point on a solo goal with four seconds showing on the clock.
On a night when Pinecrest played what could be called a relaxed, even loose, game, action rarely strayed out of the Pinecrest offensive third. Byrd’s best, and only, looks at the goal came on a corner kick and a free kick, with both coming late in the final period and both easily pulled down by sophomore reserve goalkeeper, Bradley McKeever.
The win boosts the Patriots to 9-3-1 overall. Pinecrest hosts Scotland tonight in the season’s second meeting of the two teams. Junior varsity play begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity contest at 7 p.m.
