PINECREST GETS WIN OVER HOKE
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Wednesday, September 21st, 2005
Pinecrest spotted Hoke County an early goal in the first period before rousting the Bucks 5-1 in Mid-Southeastern Conference action Monday in Raeford.
The Patriots controlled possession from the outset with a medley of shots just off the mark before the Bucks made a long downfield return to open space and beat the defense on a one-man breakaway to take a 1-0 lead.
The Bucks would enjoy the advantage briefly until Michael White pushed in a header on Russell Stewart’s corner kick with 11 minutes left in the period to pull Pinecrest even.
The second period was all Pinecrest as the Patriots took care of business, producing four solid goals to clinch another conference contest.
Ninety seconds after the second-half whistle blew, Tommy Ransdell chipped a short pass to Travis Grasso 10 yards out on the left side. Grasso drilled the shot to put Pinecrest ahead.
From that point on, the Bucks were a team in the rear view mirror, trying to stop the Pinecrest train by throwing a body on the tracks. Hoke paid the price for the physical approach, dropping a pair of goals as a result of fouls.
Grasso teed up on a free kick 10 minutes into the period setting the shot for G.R. Horton, who, despite heavy traffic in front of the goal, connected for the point.
Marco Gironda cashed his ticket at the penalty mark midway through the half after being taken down hard in the box. Gironda’s goal put Pinecrest ahead 4-1.
Horton drove in the final nail with 13 minutes to go on another tight scramble in front of the goal. Michael White had the assist on the score.
Pinecrest coach Larry Martin was satisfied to get another notch in the conference race.
“I was proud of the way they came back after the Hoke goal,” he said. “They kept their composure. Some things didn’t go our way in the first half, but in the second half they turned things around.”
Pinecrest moves to 3-0 in league competition and 5-3 overall. Hoke County drops to 0-2 and 2-4-1.
The Pinecrest junior varsity cruised past Hoke 10-1. David Adams led the scoring with four goals. Tyler Dawson added three. Phirose Divecha and Evan Cole contributed one each. The win boosts the jayvees to 3-0-0 in conference play and 5-2-1 overall.
Pinecrest entertains conference opponent Jack Britt tonight, with the junior varsity getting things started at 5:30 p.m. Terry Sanford High School, from the Two Rivers Conference, is in town Friday for a non-conference clash.
