PINECREST SOCCER BREAKS INTO TOP 10
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Wednesday, October 27th, 2004
Pinecrest moved into the top 10 in this week’s North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association 4-A rankings and knocked on the door of an eighth consecutive Mid-Southeastern Conference title with a 6-1 win over Seventy-First on Monday.
The Patriots broke into the rankings at ninth place, ahead of RJ Reynolds High School and close on the heels of New Hanover and Hoggard high schools.
The Patriots were in the driver’s seat of the conference race going into Monday’s match at Seventy-First, but they had to dig for the keys before they could get out of the driveway.
The Falcons startled the Patriots in the early going when forward Kenneth Cohen sent a long kick towards the Pinecrest goal from 40 yards out. Patriot goalkeeper Travis Frazier knocked down the shot but the ball rolled backwards into the goal for a 1-0 Falcon lead.
Pinecrest got its motor running in the 22nd-minute when Tommy Ransdell swiped the ball from a pair of Falcon defenders near the 18, made a quick shuffle and found a low groove into the left side of the net to knot the score.
Travis Grasso moved the Patriots into the passing lane a few minutes later with a bullet to the net from his favorite spot deep in the left corner.
The lead grew again when Michael White cut off a defensive return from in front of the box and drilled the shot for a 3-1 Pinecrest advantage.
Pinecrest playmaker G. R. Horton connected off Andy Tagliareni’s kick with time running out in the first half to push the Patriots up 4-1 at the break.
Horton had a big hand in the second half, as the Patriots settled into cruise mode for the period. Russell Stewart’s delivery to Horton opened the door for a waist high rocket from the 18 that added another point to the total.
The Patriots capped the scoring when Horton drove down the middle and chipped off to Karl Ainslie, slipping in on an angle run from the left side. Ainslie one-stepped the ball and tucked the shot into the near corner for the goal and a 6-1 advantage.
Pinecrest improves to 15-3-2 overall and 11-1-1 in the league. Seventy-First drops to 4-9-0 and 4-6-0.
The Patriots wrap up the regular season Wednesday night when they host Douglas Byrd. A Pinecrest win guarantees the Patriots another conference title, setting up a first-round bye in next week’s state playoffs.
Pinecrest seniors will be recognized Wednesday in special Senior Night activities as they compete in their final regular season contest.
