PATRIOT SOCCER TEAM TOPPLES
WESTOVER TO REMAIN IN FIRST

It was more chore than challenge for the Pinecrest varsity soccer squad in a 14-0 romp over Westover Wednesday at Fayetteville.
Playing before a Westover crowd that topped out at close to half a dozen on the home side of the field, the match presented a dramatic picture of the two extremes that exist in Mid-Southeastern Conference soccer.
Pinecrest put 10 names on the score sheet with Scott Phifer at the top of the page with a hat trick followed by Travis Grasso, who added a pair of goals.
The balance of the scoring was a team roll call with Omar Abusamra, Karl Ainslie, G. R. Horton, Marco Gironda, Michael White, Tommy Ransdell and Dylan Sellars adding one apiece for the Patriots.
Pinecrest goalkeeper Travis Frazier walked the field to get his turn at scoring on a penalty kick in the second half. Frazier buried the shot in the right corner.
Westover contributed an own goal when a Wolverine defender attempted to clear the ball at the edge of the box and sent an errant pass over his own keeper’s head into the net.
Pinecrest blunted the attack as much as could be expected without spotting the opposition a few goals, covering all the passing drills and making liberal substitutions.
Still, frustration flared for a Westover team that has to be admired for taking the field and playing hard without the benefit of a lot of fan support on their home pitch.
The win maintains Pinecrest’s spot at the top of the heap in the Mid-Southeastern Conference. The Patriots stand at 13-3-2 overall and lead the conference at 10-1-1. Westover falls to 0-10 in both categories.
Pinecrest wraps up its conference schedule with games against Seventy-First and Douglas Byrd next week, teams it defeated 13-0 and 12-0, respectively, in earlier meetings this season. The Patriots must win both games to retain the conference lead.
The conference title comes with a bonus in the form of a first-round bye in the state playoffs.
