PHS SOCCER A STEP CLOSER

     One step at a time.
The Pinecrest soccer team rolled into Hoke County High's Raz Autry Stadium Wednesday just five steps away from their eighth consecutive Mid-Southeastern Conference title. Pinecrest coach Larry Martin didn't want his team looking too far down that path and stumbling along the way with Hoke playing the part of the spoiler.
But the Patriots planted a cleat in the Hoke County turf and left a 9-0 footprint on the Bucks as they moved ahead.
While the match started with a touch of urgency in a lineup rearranged by injuries, it didn't take long for the Patriots to set up camp in the Hoke defensive end.
Joe Johnson booted a corner kick into the crowd in front of the goal where Michael white won the scramble with the keeper to finish the goal and get the Patriots on the board.
Two minutes later, Omar Abusamra got the first piece of a hat trick when he pulled the trigger on a cross served up by Travis Grasso from the left side.
Ten minutes later sophomore Karl Ainslie sidestepped a pair of defenders on a diagonal route across the middle and chipped out to Abusamra who delivered a power shot to the net to put the Pats up 3-0.
Pinecrest moved front and center on the next opportunity when a foul in the box sent Casey Wylie to the penalty mark for the penalty kick. Wylie burried the shot in the right corner to put the Patriots ahead 4-0.
G.R. Horton converted Dylan Sellars' corner kick in the waning moments of the first half to spread the gap to a comfortable 5-0 at the break.
Horton picked up where he had left off at the break as he banged in another goal two minutes into the second half, taking advantage of another Grasso assist.
Grasso went to the corner two minutes later and lofted another bomb into the middle where White picked up the point to make it 7-0.
White stepped into the pocket on the left side and aimed a pass toward Marco Gironda waiting in front of the goal a dozen yards out. The pass went over Gironda's head, but Daniel Johnson moved in off the right wing, collected the cross and completed the delivery to the goal.
With five minutes left to play, Hoke had already taken down the flag and sent the ball boys home. Pinecrest had played everyone but the bus driver and the only trick left in the box was Abusamra's hat trick.
The senior midfielder picked up the play at midfield, shook the last defender and launched a bull's eye from 30 yards out to wrap up the game at 9-0 -- one step down, four to go.
The win advances the Patriots to 11-2-2 overall and 8-1-1 in the league and sets the stage for Monday's showdown with Jack Britt.
In a prelude to that match, Pinecrest will host Hoggard in a non-conference clash Friday. Hoggard is ranked seventh in soccerinfo.com's state 4-A standings. Varsity play starts at 7 p.m., preceded by the jayvee match at 5 p.m.

Jayvee Action

The Pinecrest jayvee train also rolled through Hoke County with a 6-0 shutout that added another notch to their 12-0 unbeaten record.
Bradley McKeever led the scoring with a pair of goals. Matt Sessoms, Coby Kavanaugh and Chase Blake chipped in one each. An own goal contributed by Hoke rounded out the Patriot total.
Assists were credited to Tyler Dawson (two), Win Pratt, Victor Bellow, Ben Gartman, and Blake.
