PHS WINS IN SOCCER

     Second-half goals by Scott Martin and Mike Hinerth broke open a close match giving the Pinecrest boys' soccer team a 3-0 victory over Hoke County in Raeford Monday night.
     Tonight at 7 p.m. the Patriots, 3-0 in the Mid-Southeastern Conference, meet 3-0 Jack Britt (6-4 overall) in a 7 p.m. home match.
     Now 5-5-2 overall, Pinecrest scored a first half goal when Gabe Bruno finished a cross from Dustin Burns. Early in the second half, Scott Martin received a cross from Travis Grasso, controlled it with his first touch, and put the ball in the net with his second.
     Hinerth completed the scoring against the winless Bucks, connecting from about 35 yards out.
     Rashad Gatling and Jonathan Shute shared the Patriots third straight league shutout and fifth of the season overall. The Patriots out shot the visitors 35-3.
     The Pinecrest junior varsity, now 8-2-1, bounced back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to defeat Hoke 3-2. The patriots came out roaring after the intermission drawing even on goals by Marco Gironda and Scott Phifer off of assists by Logan Creque and Tommy Ransdell. The game-winner came about midway through the half on a solo run from midfield by Creque, who connected from about 12-yards out.
     The Pinecrest freshmen team (6-2) also picked up a victory Monday defeating the Richmond County junior varsity 4-1.
