The winner of tonight’s boys’ soccer game between Pinecrest and Jack Britt may be the team that does the best job of putting Monday’s frolicking wins behind them. The Patriots enter the den of the Buccaneers coming off of a 13-1 pasting of Hoke County, while the Bucs had almost as easy a time defeating Westover 12-2. The surprising Bucs lost 13 seniors from a year ago and are 5-3 overall. They lead the Mid-Southeastern Conference with a 3-0 record. Pinecrest, now 5-2-2 overall, and Scotland County are tied for second at 2-0-1. After Monday’s game, Pinecrest coach Larry Martin was asked how he would go about trying to bring his team back to reality following the too-easy win. “It’s a challenge to do that and the first thing I’ll say is to forget last night because it wasn’t productive for us,” he said. “We have to get ready for what is one of the top four teams in the conference. They, along with us and Scotland and Richmond, can finish anywhere based on where things are right now.” The Patriots scored five times between the ninth and 15th minutes of the first half with junior Scott Martin picking up two of his four goals for the night. Ten different players scored for the home team. The Bucks averted the shutout on a goal by Scott Mason from 45 yards away with less than two minutes to play. The four goals by Martin tied the team record set by his brother Drew in 1997 and matched by Danny Milewski in 2000. Each time, Hoke was the opponent. Following Martin’s first goal, Jonathan Gribben finished a rebound of a Dustin Burns shot making it 2-0. A minute later Stephen Lacher dribbled through a bevy of Bucks for the third goal. Gabe Bruno soared to head in a Martin corner kick to make it 4-0. Two more goals by Martin and a shot that hit the top bar and dropped inside the goal line by Brad Shinn made it 7-0 at halftime. Scott Martin thought that Hoke’s defensive approach played into his team’s hands. “They were trying to play the offside trap which really wasn’t too smart because we have such a strong offense compared to their defense,” he said. “We were just burning them because of it.” Rashad Gatling, Jonathan Shute and Neil Perez shared the goaltending for Pinecrest. Perez, the shortest of the three, and a midfielder and defender by trade, took over in the net to give the starters some time in the field. He watched helplessly as Mason’s well-struck rainbow sailed over him for a rare Buck goal against Pinecrest. “There wasn’t a thing Neil could do,” coach Martin said. “As soon as he (Mason) hit that ball, I went uh, oh — wrong guy, wrong place, wrong time.” Hoke County, now 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the league, fielded a junior varsity team for one of the first times. The Patriots defeated them 7-0 to improve to 6-1. <-Previous 9-11-02 at Richmond County (W, 5-1) 9-18-02 at Jack Britt (W, 2-0) Next-> |
