CARY IMPS SHUT OUT PINECREST
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Wednesday, August 21st, 2002
Pinecrest boys’ soccer coach Larry Martin wasn’t willing to give the opponent all of the credit for his team’s tepid performance in a 2-0 loss at Cary Monday night.
“We looked like we had lead in our socks,” Martin said. “They have a good squad, but I’d like to say this was just one of those nights when we didn’t have it.”
Cary, 2-0-1 in the early season, kept the visitor’s goal under siege for most of the first half, while Pinecrest mounted little offense of its own.
The only goal of the half came in the 12th minute. An outlet throw by Patriot goalkeeper Jonathon Shute was intercepted by the Imp’s Zach Schilawski about 30 yards from the goal. The freshman forward made a quick feed across the penalty area to an all-alone Kareem Ayad who whisked the ball by the goalkeeper.
Ayad added a second-half goal on a penalty kick.
Shute’s errant toss followed a series of turnovers in the back by the Patriot defense that finally caught up with them. The junior had an otherwise outstanding half in stopping five shots.
“He may have made a mistake, but he made up for it,” his coach said. “I can count several other shots that should have been goals.
“They had speed from the top all the way back to the wings. I don’t know what the deal was, but tonight we looked disorganized on defense. We were lagging in the middle and we were lagging on the outside. All we can do is try to fix the things that were wrong and move on.”
The Imps out shot the Patriots 13-3 for the half and 21-5 overall.
The Patriot attack rarely penetrated the Imps’ third of the field. Ironically, the most dangerous balls were played from the back by defenders Doug Andrews and Matt Capasso.
A header by Gabe Bruno off a cross by Andrews late in the first half provided Imp’s goalkeeper Burke McGuone with his only test of the night. The sophomore bobbled the ball, but recovered just in time with Patriot forward Scott Martin nearby ready to pounce on it.
“Everybody was tucked in the middle, and we tried to pass it up through the middle — and the outside was wide open,” Martin said of his team’s ineffective attack.
Cary coach Michael Dunphy said defense has been one of his team’s strong points. His team is unscored on in its first three matches.
“We have a defensive line of sophomores and juniors that has been together for a year,” he said. “They’ve been a good little corps of players.”
Both teams loaded their pre-conference schedules with tough opponents. Pinecrest (1-0-1), of the Mid-Southeastern 4A, defeated seventh-ranked Pine Forest 3-0 (NCSCA pre-season poll) and tied eighth-ranked Hoggard. It is idle until next Tuesday when it entertains Two Rivers Conference toughie Terry Sanford.
Cary, of the Tri-Seven 4A, defeated Garner and tied sixth-ranked Athens 0-0. They have Leesville and Sanderson still to play this week.
“We’ve got a good thing going with them,” Dunphy said of the almost annual meetings with Pinecrest. “It’s always a great contest. Nobody ever blows anybody out.”
Pinecrest also received strong goaltending from Rashad Gatling in the second half (five saves). McGuone had two saves in recording his third straight shutout. Cary also won the junior varsity game 2-0.
