City to hand out smoke alarms

DURHAM -- The Durham Fire Department has received 600 of 11,000 donated smoke alarms and batteries through the third annual "Operation Save a Life," a public service campaign launched with 18 other Triangle fire departments.

It is recommended that residents install smoke alarms on every floor of their home and near or inside all sleeping areas.

The alarms will be provided to residents free. For information, contact a local fire station or call the Durham Fire Department's community relations coordinator at 560-4242, ext. 242.
