DURHAM -- Fire heavily damaged the attic of a duplex in East Durham early Thursday morning, but no one was injured, fire officials said. The duplex at 1119 Eva St. was a vacant house that had no electricity or gas, but there was evidence that somebody may have been living in the attic where the fire began, according to Assistant Fire Chief Dan Curia. No one was there when firefighters arrived. Firefighters got the call at 3:47 a.m. and 22 personnel were at the scene about an hour, he said. Curia said the fire was contained primarily to the attic, and firefighters could see flames coming from the rear gable of the attic when they arrived. The cause of the blaze is being investigated.
