Solution

This problem is a simple matter of applying the laws of equilibrium. Since we do not know the force that the wall exerts on the system, we can place the pivot point there and calculate the torques, which also must be balanced as the system is in equilibrium. First we need a value for the force that T exerts in the y direction.

Sin45 = Fy/T
Fy = (Sin45)T

Now we can find the value of T by employing the fact that the counterclockwise torques must equal the clockwise torques, because the system is in equilibrium. (*Note: Make sure that all kg and g units are converted to Newtons.)

Torque CW = Torque CCW
24.5 N * 3.2 m + 0.588 N * 1.6 m = Sin45(T) * 3.2 m
Sin45 (T) = 79.3
T = 35 N
