Goron Village
You return to the dawn of the Final Day. Tatl tells you that the quickest way to the mountains is through the North Gate. (Remember you’re in the South Gate Town... so to go to the North Gate, go up.) But we need to do some preparation first. Play the Inverted Song of Time, then go to the Bomb Shop in West Clock Town. When there, buy a bomb bag. It’ll cost 50 rupees. You'll also need to collect some arrows and bombs (the bomb bag should come with bombs, but if you bought the bomb bag ahead of time, you need to restock). You can buy some from the store, or go around and find some in bushes and such. Now head out the North Gate.
It is snowy outside North Gate, and there are a few Dodongos around. (Eenos take the place of Dodongos at night.) To kill the Dodongos, slash at their tails. Watch out though, because as soon as you do, they’re gonna spin around and blow fire at you. And the damage from that tail smacking you is tough stuff. For the Eenos, just slash them. The bigger Eenos will break into smaller Eenos, and the smaller ones are dead in a couple of smacks. Go forward down the slope to the left. Walk up the path to the other side until you encounter some big ice chunks. Don’t touch them, or YOU'LL turn into a big ice chunk. Look up and Z-target. You’ll see pointy ice hanging from above. Shoot it twice with an arrow and it will fall and break the ice below, allowing you free passage through. Watch out for White Boes around these parts at night. They are the same thing as Black Boes except they’re white (hmmm) to blend in with the snow. You can break the small snowballs with your sword, but the big ones need a bomb or a Goron. There are sometimes goodies inside of the snowballs. Soon you’ll come to Mountain Village.
Look around a little and you’ll find another owl statue. Yay! Slash it to open it for warping. Now make your way to the right and continue on. You’ll come to a bunch of bridges over a frozen lake. Follow the bridges. Watch out, White Wolfos like to pop up in the islands. Eventually you’ll make it to Goron Village.
Make your way to the back of the Village and you should run into owl man! He’ll talk to you for a while then expect you to follow him to a shrine. The thing is, there’s no path to the shrine. If you follow owl boy, it looks like you’re going to fall to your death. But, like he says, “Do not be daunted by appearances.” Just follow behind him. As you jump for the edge, you’ll find that you land on an invisible platform. The trick is to watch out for owl feathers that fall on the invisible platforms. That way, you’ll be able to tell where to go. When you reach the shrine, Kaepora Gaepora will talk to you a little more then fly away. Now enter the shrine. In this room is a bunch of plants, three big stones and a treasure chest. You can blast the stones with a bomb, and under one is a small chest with a purple rupee! In the treasure chest in the center of the shrine is the Lens of Truth! This is also from Ocarina of Time. Through it, you can see things that were previously invisible. Watch out, there’s an invisible Skulltula and an invisible small chest with twenty rupees. Once you get all you need, exit the shrine and use the Lens to jump back to the land. Still looking through the Lens, you should see a floating Goron. Talk to him and he’ll tell you to follow him, if you can really see him. If you need to save magic energy, you can always follow his shadow on the ground. He’s just leading you to the entrance of Goron Village anyway. Once there, he’ll wait for you to catch up. Then follow him out of the village.
He’ll lead you back across the bridges. Which is kind of annoying because the White Wolfos will pop back up. They have no respect for a chick (or dude) on a mission. Just ignore the Wolfos and keep following ghost man. Actually, you could just drop down to the frozen lake, follow the ramp up to the other side and wait for the ghost to catch up with YOU. Continue to follow him back into Mountain Village and, eventually, he’ll fly up into the air. Look at the cliff. With the Lens, you can see ladders on the wall. Jump across the floating ice platforms and climb up the ladders. If the ladder ends, do not try to continue to climb. Because you will fall. Just back up (down) and try another route. When you come to a split, use these directions: right, left, right. When you reach the top, you’ll see a Goron ice cube, a shivering Goron, and a ghost Goron. Follow the ghost Goron in the tunnel.
He’ll be waiting for you in front of a stone pillar. He’ll introduce himself as Darmani the Third. He died when he went to Snowhead to stop the demon that had caused the blizzard at Goron Village. Ew... I hadn’t noticed it before, but dude has a big gash across his stomach. Ewww. Anyway, apparently, he’s been talking to Kaepora, and Kaepora told him that you have magic. So Darmani asks you to bring him back to life so he can help his Goron people. Or if you cannot bring him back, heal his sorrows. Fortunately, our friends at Nintendo knew Plexie was a little slow and highlighted the term “heal” twice. So whip out your Ocarina and play “Song of Healing”. Darmani looks dazed and starts swaying, and you see a touching clip of how much the Gorons admired Darmani. Then a Goron mask appears where Darmani was and falls at your feet. With a few parting words, Darmani rests in peace, and you get the Goron Mask! Now you can turn into a Goron! Score! So go ahead and turn into a Goron. You can read Darmani’s grave to learn the moves for a Goron. Then go to the back of the grave and pull it backward. Hot spring water will fill the ditch. You can scoop up the water in a bottle. If you keep it for too long, it will cool to regular spring water. But with the hot spring water, you can melt ice. Hmm... So gather some hot spring water in a bottle and head out of the cave.
To save time, when you’re getting down the cliff, just turn back into Link and fall into the water below. Don’t go into water as a Goron or you’ll sink and drown. Once you climb back on land, turn back into a Goron because they roll quicker than Link can walk. Go back to the area with the bridges. Remember on one of the islands, a grotto was covered with ice? Melt the ice with the hot water and drop in the grotto. In the grotto is another pool of hot spring water, large stones, and withered Deku Babas. Under one of the stones is a small chest with a red rupee. Fill up a bottle with hot water and exit the grotto. Now get on the frozen lake and inspect the large snowballs. Tatl will turn green next to the one we’re looking for. Break the snowball and you should see a frozen... thing. Pour the hot water on it and you’ll see it’s an old shriveled Goron with rather large lips. Talk to him as a Goron. He’ll say something then walk away, so talk to him again. Then he’ll recognize you as Darmani. He thinks you’re an illusion, but then you tell him that his son is crying for him. He’ll whip out a drum (I don’t want to know where from) and start teaching you a song to play to his son. But he can only remember the beginning. So you only learn the beginning. It’ll have to do.
So go back to Goron Village. You can ask the first Goron you see to open the shrine for you, or you can do it yourself. As a Goron, hold “A” then press “B” in front of the door. Go back the pathways to the baby. If you talk to him as a Goron, he’ll recognize you as “Darmi”, but continue wailing. So whip out your drums and play the Lullaby Intro. Baby Goron will recognize it and sing the next part. (The kid has an interesting vocal range.) The baby will remember his daddy and fall asleep on his face. And you have learned Goron’s Lullaby. Not only did you put the baby to sleep, but the other Gorons in the room have fallen asleep too. And the torches in the room are now lit.
Go to Mountain Village and look left of the owl marker. Follow that path. As a Goron, perform the necessary rolls and jumps. Roll yourself into spikes, then launch off the ramps. Watch out for barreling snowballs. They’ll hurt you if they hit you. If you have good timing, you can punch them to break them before they hit you. Eventually you’ll end up in Snowhead, the Goron temple.
Yes, it’s temple time again, so let’s get prepared. There’s an owl marker. Go ahead and open it. Then warp to Clock Town so you can deposit rupees. Once you’re all settled, go ahead and play the Song of Time to go back to the beginning.
