Chapter Ten

A horrendous headache made Nick awake early the next morning. He found himself laying on Criss's bed. Confused, he lifted himself up and seen himself alone. What am I doing in her room? he thought to himself.

Nick got up and went straight to the bathroom to retrieve some aspirin for his headache. He then walked down the narrow hall and into the kitchen where he spotted Criss drinking some coffee at the counter.

"Morning," he managed to say.

"Good morning. How are you feeling?"

"Horrible. Bad hangover. How much did I drink last night? I didn't even know I drank last night!"

"I wouldn't know, I was pretty gone myself."

"Why was I in your room last night?" he questioned her.

"Not sure. You were there when I woke up this morning."

"We didn't, uh, doing anything last night, did we?"

"Not that I know of. We were both pretty drunk, so if we did, I sure don't remember."

Criss said that pretty casually, making Nick a little worried. He didn't remember anything happening, but he was drunk.

"Criss, are you sure, 100%, positive we didn't do anything? If we did I need you to tell me, now."

After a brief pause between them Criss spoke. "Nick, nothing happened that would get you in trouble. "

"What does that mean?"

"We kissed. That's all. A simple kiss on the mouth. Nothing else. I'm not pregnant or anything."

"Oh gosh. I have to tell Amanda, I'm not keeping a simple thing like that a secret. I do not want to lose her, again."

"Calm down Nick. Gosh. And if you must know, I talked to Amanda this morning. I called her and told her what happened. She's not going leave you Nick. She was a little mad at first, but she's over it."

"When did you call her?"

"She called here about an hour before you woke up. I told her you were still sleeping."

"I'm going to call her. "

Nick went to his room where he would have the privacy to talk to his girlfriend. He dialed her number and waited for her to pick up.

"Hello?"

"Hey," Nick said sweetly through the receiver.

"Nick. How's my baby doing?"

"Your baby is just fine, how's mine?"

"Lonely, missing you, but other than that I'm fine."

"I just wanted to tell you I'm sorry about last night."

"What about last night?"

"The kiss."

A little shocked and confused, Amanda asked sternly, "What kiss Nick?"

"Criss said she told you."

"Told me what!?"

"Did you talk to her this morning?"

"Yeah, but she didn't mention anything about a kiss. Nick what happened?"

"Last night I got pretty drunk, so was Criss, and according to her we kissed."

"Not again. Man."

"I don't even remember it Amanda. It didn't mean a single thing to me, promise. Even though I don't remember it, I felt nothing. I love you Amanda, not Criss."

"I know. Why would she lie though, telling you she told me?"

"I don't know. I don't even remember having a drink last night. All I remember was having pop. I never poured myself liquor. Someone must have spiked my drink when I wasn't near it."

"Criss wouldn't do it, would she?"

"I don't know how she could. She was in the bathroom throwing up most of the time. I was in there with her for awhile, that's when I left my drink unattended. She couldn't have done it."

"It's all over with now. Just promise me, no more parties without me there to protect you."

"Of course. I'm leaving in 2 days for Florida so I don't have time for another party."

"Call me when you get to Florida. I wanna make sure you got there ok."

"Yes mother dear."

"Whatever Nick."

Nick said, "I miss you."

"I miss you too. It's been like 2 days only. I want to see you. But I have to wait forever- again."

"2 months isn't forever but it's sure a long time. If you weren't in school I'd take you to Florida with me."

"I wish I could come. I'd love to go. How long are you staying there?"

"About a week, maybe two."

"Oh, too long for me to miss. Maybe next time."

"You still are coming after Christmas, right?"

"Of course. I'd come sooner but my parents want me to spend Christmas with them, otherwise I'd be out there before."

"We'll just have our own Christmas after Christmas."

"Yep, and we get to spend New Years together."

"That's going to be fun, I can promise you that."

"Oo, now I'm getting excited. But it's over 2 months away. I have to wait."

"Aww. "

"Well, Nick, I have to get off now. My mom needs the phone and she says Hi."

"Okay, tell her I say hi too. Love you sweetie."

"Love you too."

"Bye."

"Bye."

After hanging up with Amanda he went in search of Criss. She had some explaining to do.

He found her in the privacy of her bedroom. She looked like she was deep in her book.

He interrupted, pulling up a chair, "Okay girly, whatz up?"

"Nothing," she replied to his question.

"I'll think differently. You lied to me."

"Why, what did I say?"

"You didn't want me to tell Amanda about the kiss so you told me that you already talked to her. Explain."

"Nothing to explain," Criss set down her book, "so I didn't tell her -big deal."

"It is. You didn't want her to know. You wanted me to keep it a secret, for some reason I'd like you to share."

Criss got up out of her chair and started for the kitchen. Nick followed her.

"Why should she know? "

"I don't keep secrets from her. It ruins a relationship. You should know that."

"What does that supposed to mean?" Criss was getting frustrated with all the questions. She leaned on the counter and and looking at Nick with a face that could kill.

"You kept secrets from me. That's why our relationship didn't work out."

"Excuse me? You broke up with me because you were so in love with Amanda. I couldn't compete with her. So, maybe I did lie a few times. It's not like it mattered. I was only rebound when Amanda left. I didn't mean a thing to you."

"What!? You meant a lot to me. So maybe I was in love with Amanda. It wasn't like she was coming back. You meant more to me that rebound, I'm not like that. But we are better off as friends and you know that."

"I guess. But since you don't like me keeping secrets from you and you don't keep anything from Amanda, you might want to know something. Things went further then a kiss last night Nick. " Criss stopped at her last sentence. She walked into the living room while Nick stood there a little shocked.

Once he realized what she said a little more, he asked, "How much further Criss?"

"Wouldn't you like to know."

Nick moved his position to the living room. "Yes I would like to know. I have a right to know if things happened. "

"No, it's not like it matters to you Nick. You're with Amanda, not me."

"Exactly! I'm with Amanda, not you. Nothing should happen between us. Are you trying to break us up?!?"

"Nope."

"Criss, " his voice getting angry, "what the heck happened last night? You tell me now or I'm leaving and never coming back."

" You came on to me. You were so drunk it was funny. I wasn't as gone as you, I had enough common since to know what you were doing but you think I was going to stop it? No, it's exactly what I wanted. I wanted you and I got it."

"You would do that to me? Keep something going that I had no control over? You would do that to yourself, you knew that I love Amanda. And worse you would do that to your best friend? I can't believe you at all. I'm out of here."

Nick walked out the door slamming it and took off in his car. He didn't know where he was going but ended up driving to his house. No one was there repairing anything so he was by himself. He went into the kitchen and started throwing and smashing dishes.

"Ugh!!! Why!!? " he yelled furiously.

He got back in his car and drove the 20 minutes to the airport. He walked up to the counter and asked the lady, "When is your next flight to Denver?"
