Still The One-Chapter 13

By: Lisa Marie

Lis opened her bedroom door two hours later and heard silence. This is way too unnerving, she thought to herself as she made her way downstairs and into her kitchen. She nearly screamed when she saw Nick sitting at the table, giving Michael a bottle.

"You're finally up." Nick stated, looking back down at their son.

Lis waited till her heart slowed down to speak. "What are you doing here?"

"Shan let me in before she left. Had an appointment, I told her to go I'd stay with Michael."

"Oh." She opened the cupboards and took out a box of cereal and headed to the table. "You can leave now."

"Can't actually. Feeding my son, then there's the matter of you and me."

"What you and me?" she asked, realizing she needed to get out of the house if she was going to avoid him any longer.

"We need to talk about when I can see Michael."

"Is that all?" she sighed as relief filled her.

Nick nodded. "For now yep."

"You can take him today. I've got things to do for the wedding."

He looked up, suddenly remembering them planning their wedding. "What do you have to do?"

She looked at him startled. "Check on the flowers and the dress, little things. Get something for Rok."

"I remember you hiding your dress." Nick smiled. "You looked perfect that day Lis."

"Thanks."

"You're wearing a different dress right?" he asked, he didn't want her marrying B in the one she had married him in. Then it hit him, he wouldn't let it get that far.

"New one yeah. And Michael all ready has his little suit, he's gonna be the handsomest guy there." she smiled at her son who was staring up at Nick.

Shan pulled her car into the recording studio parking lot and got out, checking the lot for Bri's car. She spotted his BMW a few cars over and headed inside. The place was nearly deserted as she headed upstairs to where the Boys usually worked. The door to the office was partially open and she saw Brian sitting there, writing in a notebook.

"Knock knock." she said, opening the door a little more.

"Shan! Hey you, come in." he smiled at her.

"Am I interrupting, cuz I can go."

"You go and I'll haul you back in here. What brings you by?"

Shan sat down and smiled at him nervously. "Impulse."

Brian laughed. "Okay."

Nervously she ran a hand through her hair. "B, remember that talk we had last night?"

He nodded. "Of course."

"You know that guy I was talking about?"

"You said he didn't know how you felt about him."

"Yeah, but I think I want to tell him." Her blue eyes met his. "B, it's you."

"M...me?" he stammered, pushing himself away from the table. He looked at her in shock. "You have feelings for me?"

Shan nodded. "And since your marrying Lis in a week, I thought I'd tell you."

Nick walked out of the nursery and stopped seeing Lis getting ready in her room. He leaned against the doorway and watched her. He smiled to himself, realizing how much he'd missed all the little things they'd done together. Before he could stop himself he walked into her room.

Lis felt his eyes on her as she slid the shirt over her head and she kicked herself for not closing the door. Instead of telling him to go away she ignored him and went about getting ready, she brushed her hair and tied it back in a messy bun. Suddenly she felt him behind her.

"Why don't you wear your hair down?" he whispered.

She shrugged in response and watched in the mirror as he untied the ribbon she'd pulled her hair into a pony tail with and her hair tumbled down. He smiled. "There perfect! Want me to give you a lift somewhere? I can watch Michael while you shop?"

"Uhm..." she couldn't figure out how to say no to him.

"Good, I'll grab Michael's car seat from downstairs and you can bring him out with you. Meet you in the driveway in five." and with that he turned and walked out of the room, leaving Lis standing there in disbelief.

Brian took a deep breath as he heard Shan's voice. "B? You honestly never felt anything between us?"

He looked at his hand which was nervously tapping a pen on the table. "Shan I'm marrying Lis in a week."

"I know that, it's just I had to get my feelings into the open. I'm not doing this to come between you."

He looked up at her slowly, "Maybe I did feel something."

At his words she nearly fell off her chair. Maybe Nick was right, splitting them up wouldn't be as hard as she thought. "You did?"

Slowly he nodded. "Last night, but Shan its too late for us."

"You're right B, I guess we'll never know what we could have had." she started to get to her feet.

"Wait."

"Hmmm?" she asked, turning around in the doorway to look at him.

"What...this is crazy but what if we had a date? But not really a date, just like lunch and got to know each other?"

Shan smiled, "That sounds perfect. No strings attached. When?"

Brian looked at his watch. "I'm free now."

"So am I, let's go."

Brian grabbed his jacket off the chair and followed her down the hall.

Nick buckled Michael into his car seat and shut the door. "Where we headed?" he asked, getting in the driver's seat.

"Nick, I can drive myself."

"Lis please let me do something for you."

"You've done enough for me," she said silently. "Fine."

"That's my girl!" Nick said with a smile as he backed out of her driveway.

Lis shook her head and rested it against the window, thinking it was going to be one long day.
