I went home that afternoon after running some errands and checked my caller ID. AJ called five times!! I laughed to myself and played my answering machine.
“Hey Kelly, It’s me, AJ. Thought maybe you would want to go catch a movie or some dinner or something later. Well, gimme a call.” The other four messages had the same basic effect.
I took a quick shower and decided to give him a call back. The phone rang three times before he answered.
“Yo? AJ speaking,” he answered.
“Do you always answer the phone like that?” I questioned.
“Yup! Who’s this?” he asked.
“This is Kelly.”
“Oh, Kel, babe! What’s up?” he questioned. I could hear the excitement rising in his voice.
“I just got home and took a shower. I’m starving, are you still up for dinner?” I asked.
“Yep, I’ll come pick ya up in 20, ok?” he suggested.
“Great! See ya then!” I said, hanging up the phone.
I had a feeling we would be going to MickeyD’s so I just threw on a pair of shorts and t-shirt. I was ready in 10 minutes, so I decided to go outside. I sat down by the beach, walking distance from mine and Nick’s house and started to sing my song for auditions.
“You have a beautiful voice,” a voice said behind me.
I jumped and turned around startled to find Nick standing there, looking handsome as usual.
“Oh, hi…didn’t realize I had an audience,” I joked, still caught offgaurd.
“Yeah, well, I just decided to come out for a walk to think and get some things straight,” he said.
“What do you mean?” I questioned.
“Oh nuthin’, it’s just that I’ve been thinking thinking about me and Hunter,” he started.
I got a bit worried that he was confiding to me about this.
“Well, she came over and we-“ he started.
Beep! Beep! AJ’s horn interrupted Nick and his headlights shone down to where we were blinding us both.
“Who’s that?” Nick aked, holding his hand over his eyes.
“I’m guessing AJ…” I trailed off, starting to walk back up to my house.
“AJ?! What’s he doing here?” Nick asked, sounding a bit jealous, which pleased me, of course.
“We’re going out to get a bite to eat,” I said nonchalantly.
“Oh…well, ya think maybe I could call you later?” he questioned, almost pleading.
“Sure! I should be back in a few hours,” I smiled, walking over to AJ’s car, leaving Nick on the beach.
“Evening Miss Kelly,” AJ said, kissing my hand and opening the door for me.
“Why thank you, Mr. McLean,” I smiled.
“Any certain place you want to dine this lovely evening?” AJ questioned.
“No, not really. Your pick,” I said.
“Great! MickeyD’s it is then!” he smiled, getting excited.
Once we arrived there, I ordered my usual cheeseburger happy meal and he ordered a super-sized quarter pounder with cheese.
“Aren’t you a bit old for happy meals?” he joked as we sat down at a booth in the back.
“Nah…besides I like the toys!” I kidded, sliding the Furby over in his direction.
We finally finished our meal and AJ drove me home.
“Thanks for taking me out. I had a really nice time tonight,” I said as AJ walked me to my door.
“My pleasure. Maybe we can do it again sometime?” he questioned.
“Of course! Just give me a call,” I smiled.
We stood there for a moment, then AJ leaned over and gently gave me a kiss of the lips.
“Goodnight Kel!” he said, walking back to his car.
“Night AJ!” I called after him.
I was stunned when I walked inside.
“Hey Kelly,” Nick greeted me from my living room.
“Aaaaah!!! What are you doing here?!” I screamed, clutching my hand to my heart.
“I’m sorry, but your door was unlocked and well, I really need to talk to someone. Is that ok?” he asked.
I caught my breath and nodded my head. I walked into the living room to listen to Nick pour his heart and soul out to me.
“So that’s when you decided to break up with Hunter?” I asked, double-checking.
“Yes, I finally realized all the guys were right about her when she snapped at you like that today,” he said.
“Well, I’m glad that you got things figured out,” I said, bringing him his second glass of coke.
“Thanks. I really appreciate you listening to me like this,” he thanked me.
“It’s no problem at all. Call me if you ever need anything, ok?” I told him.
“Ok. So enough about me…what went on with you and AJ tonight?” he said, changing the subject.
“Nothing…we just went to get something to eat. That’s it,” I said hoping to end the subject.
“Hmm…not from what I saw,” he ventured.
“You saw us kiss??” I exclaimed.
“No, but I knew if I said that, you would tell me if you did or not,” he laughed.
“Nick!!!” I yelled.
“What?” he laughed. “So you two kissed huh?” he questioned, his blue eyes turning a shade of gray as he cast his eyes down on the floor.
“Yeah, we did, but we’re just friends,” I reassured.
“Well, in that case, we’re just friends, too,” Nick said, leaning over kissing me deeply.
