Chapter Four
When I got up the next morning, I wondered why my door was closed. I got out of bed and was about to open it when it hit me. Nick Carter was down the hall. I brushed my hair and everything before I opened the door and walked out. I could hear laughing in the living room. Peeking in, I saw Brian and AJ standing in front of the couch, looking down at something and laughing."Hey," I said, walking in, "What are you guys laughing about?""Oh, hi," Brian said, turning around, "Good morning.""We're laughing at this," said AJ, moving away from the couch.Nick was asleep on the couch. His mouth was open and he looked totally out."What is he doing out here?" I asked."I don't know," said Brian, "When I got up this morning, he wasn't in the room with me, so I came out here and found him.""And what are you doing up here?" I asked AJ, "My mom gave you the key?""Your parents went out for a little while," said AJ, "So they let me up as they left.""Cool," I said, "So should we wake this guy up?""Sure," Brian said, "But how?""We could always just hit him on the head with the pillow," said AJ."That never works with him," Brian said."Good point," said AJ, "So what do we do?""Tickle him," Brian suggested."I wanna tickle him," I said, "Let me do it.""Go ahead," said Brian, "Less chance for him to yell at us.""I hope he doesn't yell at me," I said."Chances are," AJ said, "He won't.""Are you sure?" I asked."Yeah," said Brian.I hesitated for a minute. How would Nick react to me waking him up?"Just do it," AJ said."If he yells at me," I said, "I'm blaming you guys.""Don't worry," said Brian."Okay," I said. The three of us started cracking up as I tickled Nick, who jumped up wide awake."Okay," he said, "Who did that?""It was their idea," I said, pointing to the other two guys."I had a feeling," said Nick, "What time is it?""Almost nine," Brian said, looking at the clock, "Kevin and the others should be coming soon.""Cool," said Nick, running his fingers through his hair, "So who actually woke me up?""She did," AJ said, pointing to me."Thanks a lot," I said, "I thought you were going to take the blame.""We did," said AJ, "But he asked who actually did it and that's you.""Never trust these guys," Nick told me.Brian started to laugh. "Speak for yourself," he told Nick."What were you doing in here anyway?" AJ asked."Brian snores," said Nick."I do not!" exclaimed Brian."Yeah, you do," said Nick. They argued about that for a while. By the time they were done, Kevin and Howie had shown up."Where's everyone else?" Nick asked."They're coming later," said Howie.Okay," said Nick."So what do you guys want to do today?" I asked, as we looked through the refrigerator for something to eat."Beach?" Brian suggested."Shopping," said AJ."Arcade," Nick piped up.We all looked at him. "Arcade?" we asked together."Oops," said Nick, "Okay. Maybe not.""Maybe not is right," Kevin said, "You can go to the arcade anytime you want when we're on the mainland.""Okay," said Nick."If you guys want we can go to the beach," I said, "I just have to call Kim and tell her what the plans are.""So the beach?" Kevin asked the other guys."Yeah," they agreed."I'm going to call Kim," I said, "You guys can eat whatever you want.""You're not going to eat?" Nick asked."I don't eat breakfast," I said."Okay," said Nick.I went to call Kim while the guys continued to hunt for food in the kitchen. We made plans to meet at one of the Hawaii beaches at noon. When I got back to the kitchen, the guys were sitting around the table, eating chips and cookies."Very nutritious," I said, sitting down next to Nick."We all don't like to cook in the morning," he said, handing me a cookie, "Here.""Thanks," I said, taking it from him."So are we going to the beach today?" Brian asked."Yep," I said, "We have to meet Kim at noon.""I guess we should go and get our stuff from the hotel," said Kevin. The hotel people left to go and get their stuff. I left Brian and Nick to eat to their hearts' content in the kitchen while I went into my room. I was packing some stuff into my bag with there was a knock on the door."Who is it?" I called."Nick."I went to open the door. Nick was standing out side with the bag of cookies."Hi," I said."Hi," said Nick, "You only ate one cookie, so I brought the rest to you.""Thanks," I said, "But you can eat them.""Are you sure?" Nick asked."Yeah," I said.Nick looked like he was considering it, but then he shook his head. "I don't think I should," he said, "The other guys already give me enough grief about eating too much junk food.""I don't see why," I said."I'll be right back," said Nick.He left the room and a minute later, Brian came running in."I need to ask you something," he said, closing the door."What?" I asked."This is important," said Brian."Yeah, okay, what?" I asked."Do you like Nick?"He just came right out and asked. I didn't know what to tell him. I wanted to tell him the truth, but then if Nick didn't like me back...then what?"Well?" asked Brian."Um," I said, "If I tell you, do you promise not to tell anyone else?""Yeah," Brian said, "Of course.""Okay," I said, "Then, yes, I like him. The thing is, though, I don't think he likes me. Not in the way I want him to like me, anyway."Brian got a huge grin on his face and then ran back out of the room, almost ramming into the door in the process.I shook my head and laughed as I continued getting my stuff together. When we were all finally ready to go, we loaded everything into my car."Nick," said Brian, "Why don't you sit in the front with Jen.""Huh?" Nick asked, not knowing what was going on."Yeah," said AJ (who had stayed at the house instead of going back to the hotel), "Sit in the front.""Okay," Nick said.He climbed into the front seat next to me and we were off. On the way to the beach, we could hear Brian and AJ whispering in the back seat."What are you guys talking about?" Nick asked them."Nothing," said AJ."I don't believe you guys," said Nick, "What were you talking about?""Nothing," Brian said, not sound very convincing."Whatever," said Nick, giving up.When we got to the beach, we found the others already there in the parking lot, waiting for us. Kim was just pulling in behind us."You guys got here fast," Nick said to Kevin, as we got out of the car."We just got here," Kevin replied, "Howie was taking forever.""It wasn't me," said Howie, "It was Kevin.""No, it wasn't," Kevin argued."You guys," said Brian, "Enough.""This is the first time in a long time Brian's broken up an argument," Nick whispered to me."Really?" I asked."Yeah," said Nick.We unloaded the car and headed to find a clear patch of sand on the already crowded beach. It was hard to find a spot for all seven of us."How about," said Brian, "Jen and Nick go off and find their own spot while the rest of us go and find one together.""Are you crazy?" Kevin asked, "Think about the photographers and the field day they would have with pictures of Nick and a new girlfriend.""I'll go with them," said Brian."That's not part of the plan," AJ hissed at his friend."Shut up," said Brian, out of the side of his mouth."Let's just go," Howie said."Can you handle three of them by yourself?" I asked Kim, as we walked along the beach, trying to find at least a small area."I think they're up to something," Kim said, "Especially those two." She motioned towards Brian and AJ."Well," I said, "Brian DID ask me if I liked Nick...you know, in one of those more than a friend kind of ways.""And?" asked Kim, "What did you say?""I told him yeah," I said, "But don't tell anyone. I don't need Nick knowing that right now.""Good point," Kim said.Eventually, we found a spot that was big enough for all of us. Brian and AJ looked disappointed. "What's wrong?" I asked them."Nothing," said Brian. We started to spread everything out and get settled. Nick barely looked at me while we were doing all of it.
