INDIAN BURIALS FOUND IN RUNWAY EXTENSION AREA.
Archaeologists have found Indian burials in an area where Macon County N.C. wants to
extend its airport runway, officials said. Skull and bone fragments found in the
area have been sent to the states Historic Preservation Office for safekeeping,
state Archaeologist Steve Claggett siad Monday.
Macon County wants to add the extension so that small jets can land
at the airport, a few miles north of Franklin N.C.
Archaeologists identified five or six probable graves within the planned 601-ft
extension of the airport runway, Claggett said. "We need to figure out
what to do next", he said, adding that meetings would be set up with State and county
leaders and representatives of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
In the past 10 years, other finds of Indian burial grounds have derailed
or delayed development.
