Lessons Learned

When he was eleven years old, his dad took him to work with him. His father was a brakeman for the railroad and when he arrived he saw something that would stay with him for a lifetime. A big old black locomotive with several boxcars behind it was speeding down the track when from out of nowhere a dog ran onto the track just in front of the train. The poor dog had a look of horror as he began to run from the train.

The boy's father said that he was one dead dog. He grabbed his son and told him to observe what would be a horrible conclusion to the dog's life. He continued by saying that the dog would tire of running and would slow up. As he was speaking, that's exactly what transpired. The slower the dog became the closer the train came. Undoubtedly his tongue was hanging out dripping and panting its last breath. Then with a loud thud the dog became mangled beneath the train's massiveness.

He then grabbed his father totally freaking out and his father held him till he calmed down. Then he told his son that there were two ways to avoid what was the dog's destiny. One being to jump from the track but if that didn't work there was one other way. That being to lay flat on the track and don't move till the train passes over you. Well the boy thought to himself that there was no way he could ever do either of those things.

His father tried to console him by telling him that there was something bigger taking place than just a dog's death. This wasn't the first time he heard this philosophy. All of his life his father told him that he felt destined for something. He didn't know for what but he felt we all had a purpose for being here. There had to be a reason for us being a part of God's infinite plan, he would say. Well, the son being a young man did what young men do. He let his father's words go in one ear and out the other. Then when his father died he believed his father was wrong. After all nothing ever came up to support the father's theory. So the son just blew it off thinking there was no rhyme or reason to life.

That is till seventy years later when he was a father and a grandfather. While he was crossing the railroad tracks like he did a million times before only this time his foot got caught in between the tracks. He couldn't believe how stupid he felt.

However that would soon turn to fear as he heard a train coming down the track. As the train approached faster and faster he pulled harder and harder but nothing worked. At that moment he felt he was struck with a lighting bolt of understanding. He remembered the dog and his father's advice. So slowly he lowered himself onto the track. He then laid completely flat and said a prayer as the train came barreling down no him.

The engineer seeing the old man laying down began wailing on the air horn. The engineer closed his eyes and did the only thing he could do which was run over the man. The engineer then threw the brake knowing that the man must be dead. When the train finally came to rest, the engineer ran to the end of the train. To his amazement he found the man still stuck but sitting there trying to free himself. The engineer was in shock because not only did he survive but he only had a few minor scrapes and cuts.

When they freed his foot, the engineer thought he was talking crazily because he was ranting about his father and destiny. As he calmed down, he explained the whole story to the engineer. He was amazed at his revelation that his father's role in life was to save his eighty- one-year-old son. Even though his father was dead for several decades. He confessed that he should have listened to his father way back in the day cause he was right in his observations. His father was smarter than he gave him credit for. However now he realized that even if we don't understand it we all have a purpose.

Anyhow the moral of the story is to listen and then lessons will be learned.
