Russians In Chechnya

From the Diary of Private Konner, 4th Battalion, 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized), Iran in Spring 2019:

"I arrived in the late spring of 1997, during soon after the 82nd Airborne captured Bandar-e Kahmeini. We landed and pushed north through the desert of the Khuzestan plain to Ahvaz, capturing it for six days. We had arrived at some of the oil fields that we were here to protect. But the Soviets wanted them too and they came and pushed us back. It got really ugly during the retreat, especially now that both sides were using tactical nukes. We stopped 30 miles outside of Bandar and established a front for the next three months. Then in late August the 82nd air-dropped in the far northern part of Iran, around Tabriz. That threw the Soviets for a loop, we were able to advance again and met up with the 82nd as they were running the gauntlet to withdraw back to friendly lines."
"Things began to bog down in the spring of 1998. For every mile we moved north into Iran, the Soviets pushed us back again. The Karun river just north of Ahvaz seemed to be an impenetrable barrier, blocking every attempt to cross it and move north. By the Fall though, there wasn't enough fuel to make a northern drive worth it. I had heard that what little fuel was being sent to us was being stolen by raiders to the east. I don't know for sure, but they did send two divisions to the Bushahr-Shiraz-Bandar'Abbas Triangle (as it was called) to eliminate a lot of rogue units there."
"Now it's the spring of 1999, things have started to heat up. Soviet units that had holed up for the winter are moving again. I'm sure there will be fighting for the few oil fields left. Rumor has it that our brass has their eye on one just to the north east."
