Chapter Nine...Used Background
Everything is quiet,

Since you're not around,

And I live in the numbness now,

In the background.

I do the things we did before,

I walk Haight Street to the store,

And they say ‘where’s that crazy girl?’

You don't get drunk on red wine and light no more,

‘Cause I don’t see you anymore,

Since the hospital,

But the plans I make still have you in them,

Then you come swimming into view,

And I’m hanging on your words like I always used to do,

The words they use so lightly, I only feel for you,

I only know this cause I am, way back down,

In the background.

Words they come and memories all repeat,

I lift your head while they change the hospital sheets,

I would never lie to you, no

I would never lie to you, no

I felt you long after we were through

And the plans I make still have you in them,

‘Cause you come swimming into view,

And I’m hanging on your words like I always used to do,

The words they use so lightly, I only feel for you,

I only know this cause I am, way back down,

In the background.

“But…but I still don’t get, I don’t get why you didn’t want us to know that we knew you,” Chris said.

“I don’t get why you would have needed to know. Besides, if you knew me then, wouldn’t you still?”

“No, I wouldn’t. You’ve changed, that much I can tell. I wouldn’t have known.”

“So, in other words everything would be fine and dandy if you weren’t snooping where you didn’t belong.”

“That—that’s not what I said—”

“No. You’re right. That’s not what you said. But it’s what you meant.”

“It’s not what I meant.”

“Oh, I know. You’re going to say, that, we hit a freaking bump in the stupid interstate, and the thing that contained the papers fell on you and the folder fell out.”

“Well, just as long as you know,” Chris said, a slight half-smile coming over his face.

“Well, that’s fine. I know,” Timber said after a short pause, then stopping to get up.

“But Jason—”

Timber stopped abruptly and turned on her heels. “Jason. Yes. He did what?”

“He hasn’t told the—the other guys yet but the reason is beacause he called my cell and I told him no one else was there, so then I asked what he wanted and that was it. I told him I’d tell everybody.”

“And did you?”

He shook his head. “Uh-uh, ’cause it was after I found the papers and then I was sure that you were, you know, her. So then I talked to you, and here we are. You know, you don’t have to tell them, if you don’t want to.”

“I know. But don’t you think that they have a right to be let in on it?”

Chris nodded.

“’Cos I can’t keep lying to them.”

“No.”

“Just so long as no one says the actual name. ’Cos then I’m out of here. Mom’s the only one who calls me that.”

“Okay.”

Oh, I don't know. what do you guys think of it? Should…something be changed, ’cos i don’t know.
