Making Soap for Cheap!

Below is a recipie for laundry soap that I got from the Sisters In Christ email list. Amy told me it is an old, old recipie. She also says that if the laundry is particularly dirty she uses it as a booster w/regular powdered detergant.

"I have been using this laundry soap for about 4 months now-- and have spent about 20min each month making it and the aprox cost to make what lasts me a bit over a month (2 loads a day) is 1.75/month. I think it works great!! and we have really enjoyed the savings-- It calls for Fels Naptha Laundry Soap which may be found in your local supermarket (mine did not have it) or you can order online here. I paid .99 for a bar of soap-- paid no shipping, handling or tax and it was shipped priority mail (I bought 5 bars). The recipe also calls for Washing Soda and Borax-- both of which I found in the laundry area at my supermarket (and I have seen it at several others since). Here is the recipe...

OLD -TIMEY DETERGENT

In 3 pints of water, dissolve over heat,
1/3 bar Fels Naptha Laundry Soap, grated.
Add:
1/2 cup Washing Soda
1/2 cup Borax

Combine all together and heat on stove until thickens (similar to honey).(Mine is more like gravy, or thinner!) Remove from heat. In a large bucket (at least a 2 gallon bucket but 5 gallon works better) add 1 quart hot water. Add the soap mixture.
Add enough water to make 2 gallons.
Mix until well blended.

(I added a dozen drops of orange oil, the kind for making soap, and it smells wonderful when you poor it in the machine, I don't notice it very much coming out of the washer, clothes just smell clean!)
Set aside for 24 hours. It ends up having a gel-type consistency. Use 1/2 cup per load of laundry.(I use a little more-depending on the type of load)
I hope this helps someone to cut down on laundry costs!

Please note that a visitor to this site has reported that the link for buying the Fels Naptha soap is a bad link. She has found a 1-800# for ordering the soap and lists it in my guestbook. You can get to the guestbook through the link on the bottom of The Tightwad Page.
