This scene picks up at the end of the episode titled "For Love or Money". The first part of this scene is the end of the actual episode. The actual episode is written in italics.

"We're just too different," Jo says, looking away. "It would never work." She looks at Nick wanting him to tell her that it would. He looks down, disappointed at what she said.

"Nah, Not in a million years," he says. He raises his eyes slowly, and gazes into her eyes. A million words spoken with just one look. She turns her head away. He has waited too long and he cannot wait a moment more. He leans into her. She looks up. He kisses her and she melts into his arms. She puts her arm around his neck. He puts his arm around her waist and pulls her close. She runs her fingers through his hair!

They keep kissing, passionately. He stops, looks into her eyes, takes her face in his hands, and kisses her again. Jo can feel him sweating as she touches him. She enjoys it.

"Jo!" Amy calls from outside the barn. Jo and Nick both jump, startled.

"Where are you?" Amy continues.

Nick has bumped right into the wood horse and saddle that go crashing to the floor.

"Are you all right, Jo?" Meg calls, concerned, the voices just outside the door. Nick bends down to pick up the saddle.

"Of course," Jo answers nervously as her sisters and Laurie enter the barn.

"Oh, hello Nick," Meg says.

He pops straight up. "Hey." Sweat is dripping down his face, but he is holding the saddle and cannot do anything about it.

"Good evening, Nick," Amy says, smirking.

"I was just, uh…, we were just, uh…, I mean Nick was just…showing me his saddle," Jo stutters.

"Yeah, the saddle," Nick says, nodding.

"Nice saddle, Nick," Amy says as they all look at the saddle he is holding in front of him.

"It is very nice," Meg adds.

"Wish I had one like that," offers Laurie.

They all stand staring at the saddle, an awkward silence enveloping them.

Jo looks at Nick and notices the lipstick on his mouth. Her jaw drops.

Nick looks at her and notices the saddle polish smudged on her face. He gasps.

"Nick, are you all right? You look a little flushed," Meg asks. The sweat is pouring down his face now and he tries to wipe it with his sleeve.

"Yes, you do, Nick. You must be coming down with something," Laurie confirms.

"Jo, don't just stand there. Help him with that saddle," Amy says as Laurie rights the wood horse.

Nick puts the saddle on the wood horse and wipes his face with his sleeve.

"You should get to bed, Nick. They're right, you don't look well," Jo says, trying to find a way out of this uncomfortable situation.

"Yeah. Good idea. I should get to bed. G'night," he says, stumbling over a bucket as he heads for the door.

"Laurie, why don't you help him to his room," Amy suggests with a smirk.

Laurie looks at her, shakes his head and follows Nick out the door.

Meg grins. Amy giggles. Jo blushes.

"Tell us everything, Jo," Amy says, filled with curiosity.

"Amy!" Meg scolds. She looks at Jo. "Please!"

Jo looks at her sisters and breaks into a huge smile. "Well, he was polishing the saddle when I came in to apologize. He was so hurt, he wouldn't even look at me. I thought I had ruined everything." Amy and Meg move closer as Jo continues her story.

Outside, Laurie catches up with Nick. "You look pretty happy," Laurie says.

"Yeah, well, I am."

"Jo has a way of doing that to you, doesn't she?" Laurie asks.

"Jo's got a way o' doin' a lot o' things ta me," Nick responds, laughing.

"So, are you going to tell me what happened? If I don't get your version, Amy will never let me hear the end of it. And I really want to sleep tonight."

Nick looks at him, unsure. "Alright," he says, finally. "I was polishin' the saddle. It's a beauty, ain't it? Jo come in ta 'pologize. I wasn't even sure if I could look at her. That woman makes me crazy." The two men stop by the fence and lean on it as Nick continues the story.

Back inside, the sisters are still talking. "So, you are courting then?" Meg asks, confused.

"I'm not really sure," Jo replies.

"Well, then, you must speak with him tomorrow," Amy says.

"I can't do that. He will think I am pushing him for a commitment. No. I just have to wait and see how he handles it."

Meg and Amy look at each other, disappointed.

Outside, Laurie asks, "So, it's official then?"

"Ah, I dunno," Nick sighs. "I 'as a li'l distracted."

"Well, then, you must speak with her tomorrow," Laurie says.

"Can't do that. She'll think I weren't payin' attention. No. I just have ta wait and see how she handles it."

And so, they are back to where they started. Almost.
