PART 3
"Now how many do you have, Nat?", asks Emil in an annoyed tone. Nat bites his lip regretful that he had showed off. 'But, then again, it's not every day I can do something better than the other boys,' he smiles at the thought, "Ten," he calls to Emil proudly.
"Good job, Nat", Dan complements him.
All of the sudden three bodies come flying thorough the air, landing in the water just close enough to the boys so that they become drenched. Nan and Bess pop out of the water, look at the boys' surprised faces, and start giggling hysterically. Each boy stumbles for something to say, for one thing, they're surprised to see Bess standing knee deep in water, wearing one of her best dresses, giggling like she, or Nan, have never giggled before.
"Hey, weren't there three of you?" asks Dan wondering if he was just seeing things.
Nan and Bess look down at the water just as Sam pops out gasping for air, "That had to be at least a minute!" she exclaims.
Dan jumps back in surprise, "Who are you!" he demands.
"I'm Sam," says Sam.
"Sam?" questions Nat.
"It's my fathers nick-name for her," Bess explains, "Her real name is Samantha."
"Is she a friend of yours, Nan?" Tommy asks.
"No," Nan answers, "She came to visit, Bess." Dan looked at Sam with surprise; she didn't look like the kind of friend Bess would have.
Sam new that look, she had seen it plenty of times, "I know what you're thinking", she tells Dan, "She always weirs nice clothes, has her hair done up, and things like that. But, when people got to know her, well, it's a whole other story."
The other boys that weren't able to see what all of the commotion was about, walked over to where Dan, Nat, Nan, Bess, and Sam were.
Bess took the liberty of introducing everyone to her friend, "Everyone, this is my friend Samantha, call her Sam, she's visiting me from Boston," Bess smiles at her friend and Sam smiles back, mischievously. Bess frowns, than grins figuring out what here friend meant, more games.
Dan catches the exchange of glances between Bess and Sam, "What was that?" he asks, ready for another trick at any time.
"Oh, nothing," answers Bess sweetly.
Dan passes Nat one of his own mischievous smiles.
As Nan wades over to Bess and Sam she whispers, "I think were going to have some trouble," Bess and Sam agree silently.
