Nick’s mysterious past…
[Scene: Jo and Nick share a romantic, candlelit dinner.]
Jo: There’s so much about you that I don’t know.
Jo’s innate curiosity…
[Scene: In a scene we quickly recognize as being from "Chameleon," Jo sits on the side porch waiting for an answer while Nick steadies himself on the railing, looking out into the world beyond Plumfield. Finally he speaks.]
Nick: She’s just a memory, Jo.
Make an uncomfortable mix.
[Scene: Nick speaking to Jo, stops himself from saying the name.]
Nick: …and There--
[Scene: Jo and Meg sit in the parlor in a scene straight out of "Fences"]
Jo: Why won't he tell me about her?
Finally, learn the story behind the name…
[Scene: All of Plumfield, plus Meg, Laurie, Amy, and four unfamiliar men, who by their appearance can only be friends of Nick’s from his days at sea, sit at the dining room table. Everyone’s attention is on the reminiscing of Nick and the four guests.]
Amy: Tell us about Theresa.
[Scene: All the adults of the scene before sit in the parlor drinking coffee. The roughest-looking of the four men turns to Nick.]
Man #1: So, what ever happened to Theresa anyway?
[Scene: Nick, his face cut and bruised, lies on the pier in front of a ship holding a gun, smoke still swirling from a recent gunfight. He rises slowly, looks behind him and starts to run, crying out.]
Nick: Theresa? Theresa?
Meet the woman…
[Scene: Nick enters a room with a bounce in his step and a smile on his face. He glows when he sees the woman there. She is tall, dark, and exotically beautiful.]
Nick: Hello, Theresa.
…who is a legend to some…
[Scene: the dining room scene from before]
Man #4: All the fella’s liked her.
Man #2: She was real pretty.
Man #3: Beautiful.
Man #1: Like an angel.
Nick: Yup. She was.
…a rival to others…
[Scene: Jo, obviously upset, and Meg are standing on the porch talking.]
Jo: I just cannot compete with his memory of Theresa.
…and to one man, the love of a lifetime.
[Scene: Nick is speaking softly and sincerely to Theresa. He holds her hand on his heart, and her eyes are closed.]
Nick: You are the only good thing that has ever happened to me.
But when past and present collide…
[Scene: Nick enters a kitchen, puts his arms around Theresa’s waist from behind and kisses her neck.]
[Scene: Nick turns back in the kitchen, puts his arms around Jo’s waist from behind and whispers in her ear.]
[Scene: Nick kissing Theresa.]
[Scene: Nick kissing Jo.]
[Scene: Nick desperately hurries Theresa onto a ship as he glances anxiously at the angry men who are running towards them.]
Nick: I’ll be right there, Theresa. Go on.
[Scene: In a rage, Nick throws the rough-looking sailor up against the wall.]
…will new love be enough…
[Scene: Back in the Plumfield kitchen, Nick quickly walks out, leaving Jo obviously distraught and confused.]
Jo: Nick!
[Scene: A close shot of Nick, very upset.]
Nick: How do I know what the truth is? How will I ever know?
[Scene: In the parlor at night, Nick is again walking out the door, leaving Jo calling after him tearfully.]
Jo: Don’t walk out on me! Don’t push me away!
…to erase the pain of an old loss?
[Scene: Nick lies tossing and turning in his bunk, covered in sweat, and calling out.]
[Scene: Nick and Jo sit together, speaking openly.]
Nick: I don’t know if I know what love is, Jo.
[Scene: Jo enters the parlor where Nick sits holding a glass and a half-empty bottle of whiskey.]
[Scene: Though he has not turned back to her, Nick has stopped in the doorway of the parlor. Tears are streaming down Jo’s cheeks, and it’s clear that Nick is about to break down as well. ]
Jo: You will not lose me if you let yourself love me.
